Hello!

I’m wanting to get new carpets in my house and paint the walls and ceilings. Should I paint first or get new carpets first?

  • Of course first painting, unless you like a paint stained carpet :)

  • Definitely paint first. You dont want to get paint on the new carpets :)

  • Paint first to reduce the possibility of any accidental damage to your new carpets.

  • This is a no brainer….paint first girl!! Avoid those spill ages on your brand new carpet

  • Paint first then you won’t care if it gets on the carpet.

  • Im going through this now and can I just suggest to anyone to do it BEFORE you move it! We cut the carpet back around the skirts so no prob there with painting it but there’s a strip called a smoothe edge or carpet holder – basically a piece of wood with angled nails that hold the carpet down. Super sharp and shred your fingertips. Haven’t got as far as where ALL my furniture will go for the carpet installation!!!

  • Paint, then paint wont get on the carpet

  • Definitely paint first if you can. Saves a lot of time not worrying about drop sheets etc.

  • I’m still scraping paint off the tiles after our painter went through. Even though he used drop sheets, there were still spots. Our carpet in the other rooms went down afterwards thankfully.

  • SANDRA_S SAID:
I would pull the old carpet out first and then paint as you don’t want all the dust from your carpet all over your freshly painted walls. This will also make it easier to paint the skirting boards.

Sorry about the cut and paste but there was no where to reply to this comment.
Well done Sandra_S I thought this was a well thought out answer and completely makes sense.

  • I’d choose both your wall colour and your carpets, but paint before you lay the carpet.

  • Paint first! ! We recently retiled our house and are kicking ourselves that we didn’t paint first. Now we need to drop sheet the whole house to protect it.

  • I agree with others, paint first. But before you do double check your colour samples. You don’t want to be repainting after the new carpet goes down.

  • Definitely paint first. That way it doesn’t mater if you get paint on the old flooring. Then you get the new carpet down and it will stay clean a lot longer and your room will look fresher.

  • Paint first. That way if you accidentally spill some paint at least it won’t ruin your new carpet. Also, this way the smell of new paint won’t be in the carpet also.

  • Rip up the old carpet, paint and then get the new carpet installed!

  • Most certainly paint first and then lay the carpet; it will look gorgeous!

  • Paint. You don’t want to get new carpets them get paint on them

  • It’s seems the consensus is to paint first.

  • I would pull the old carpet out first and then paint as you don’t want all the dust from your carpet all over your freshly painted walls. This will also make it easier to paint the skirting boards.
