  • Add some vinegar in the washing machine

  • I dry our towels in the dryer… They are always soft!

  • Also; ensure you do not use too much detergent or fabric softener as it can make towels hard and rough on skin. Use as little as possible; especially on towels.

  • I dry them in the dryer and they’re always much softer than if I hung them on the line; they always end up stiff! More costly than hanging on the line though. I’ve never tried fabric softener but judging by the other answers, it’s worth a shot!

  • It doesn’t matter whether it is towels or some other types of fabrics, if you use too much washing detergent they will go hard. They dry best on a breezy day. If things are really dirty using too much detergent will not get them any cleaner. There is also more risk of residue not being rinsed out of the laundry completely.

  • I use baking soda and vinegar. I find I do not need to put them through the dryer anymore. I found that fabric softeners made my towels less absorbent. I read somewhere that this was the reason too much fabric softener. I switched to white vinegar and a heap tablespoon of baking soda works a treat!

  • I find putting them in the dryer after they are washed they go softer then if I hsng them just on the line

  • I wash my towels in cold water and using only wash liquid from Adairs called Aroma Wash Laundry Liquid for Towels. I then dry them in the dryer with a fluffy dryer sheet. I refuse to line dry my towels as I hate them being hard crispy!

  • use a little bit of vinegar and wool wash with your detergent it works great keeps them soft for longer

  • Fabric softener works well and take them off the line as soon as they are dry.

  • Oh I thought you couldn’t use fabric softener on towels but I will give that a try Thanks.

  • I cheat, I always use fabric softener, and just before they are dry I bring them in and finish them in the tumble dryer, this makes them lovely, soft and fluffy, if they are new towels you may find that you need to soak them in Epson salts for a few hours to try and soften them first as new towels have a lot of fillers in them and take time to get them soft.
