Hello!

My son was diagnosed with ADHD/attention deficit disorder at the age of three years old. I’ve had him tested numerous times just to be sure that it is correct diagnosis. He is now showing signs of pushing the boundaries which I think is quite normal for a teenager however I’m wondering if anyone could help me with any ideas of groups or camps, he could join for activities as he is quite a timid child and very emotional at times?

  • Hate to break it you, but most 16 yo don’t like authority. You just gotta weight til he grows out of it and hopefully survives it

  • I think all 16yo have authority issues, I know I did and that’s many years ago now!

  • First of all I think no 16yr old likes to submit to authority and many of them might like to push the boundaries (I certainly did when I was 16).
Did you succeed to find a group for teens with ADHD ?
I don’t know if you’re religious, but at Hillsong church they provide one-on-one support for kids with a disability/disorder within the main groups activities for each age group.

  • A friend of my daughter who is about your sons age joined a martial arts group and has been thriving ever since. He’s now a motivated and lovely young man.

  • I was a challenge at this age too. You’ll need to work out with your son what he’s interested in and what he wants to do

  • Wow, what 16 yo doesn’t challenge authority?! My son liked Cubs/scouts and the army cadets were popular. We also found a sport he was interested in. It all helps.

  • Maybe a youth group would be good?

  • I’m not sure about groups or camps unfortunately but I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was younger & from what I remember I was a horrible child/teenager, I was medicated & then weened myself off the medecation, I am fine now – I think I just either learnt how to cope, or I grew out of it. If he is medicated, it should be working, if not – maybe the doses/brand need to be changed. I think you should talk to a specialist.

Good luck, I hope it all works out.

  • Thank you so very much MRS BUCKET (THAT’S PRONOUNCED BOUQUET) ! • Some volunteering helping others that are less fortunate could work wonders

  • I would try like the YMCA or boys & girls clubs . All depends on what he is into . I would say see if there are any youth groups ( church groups ) some times they have sleep overs as play video game or what ever . Maybe Music lesson if that is more up his alley

  • depending on where you live contact your local community centre or police station and they might have some resources, he too has ADHD and shines out on the water. He takes control and enjoys the whole day by getting the boat ready for other and helping out the teachers.

  • Maybe go to your gp they should have a list of support groups for your son and for yourself.

  • If your son goes to an ADHD group/camp he may just learn bad behaviour from others. I know of a case and the physciatriat then actually recommended against it. I don’t know if there is a Parents Support Group. If your son could stay with somebody he is comfortable with while you go or just one of you go, you may be able to find out different strategies. Some Police have Police Rangers. I don’t know what the criteria is. I know there is studying involved. If he is able to overcome his associated medical issues as well as shyness, who knows he may become a Police Officer. I know of some who had the option to do that.

  • I agree with Mrs Bucket, a good support group may be a good start. Good luck with that.

  • Does you son like animals. Maybe get him interested in horses, horse riding is great as they get to control the horse. Try first by trail rides. Find a local horse riding school and have a trial. I have a friend who’s child loves Sailing every weekend. He too has ADHD and shines out on the water. He takes control and enjoys the whole day by getting the boat ready for other and helping out the teachers. Some animal shelters always need helpers and carers maybe he would like to help out on the weekends. If he is interested in cars maybe a car wash would be good fun and he will get paid for his day. Some kids just love cars and love talking about the cars they have washed today.

  • I would say scouts as well. Or he could join St. John’s ambulance.

  • Scouts could be a good avenue, they have groups up to the age of 18 and then have older groups too :)

  • depending on where you live contact your local community centre or police station and they might have some resources, good on you for looking out for your boy and trying to send him in the right direction…goodluck to you both
