Hello!

My daughter is 3 and is hardly talking. She is due for grommets around April sometime. I’m not able to see a specialist until she has had the grommets in for at least a few months. I was just wondering if there’s any good games to help improve her speech?

  • Don’t know if you can enlarge the photo I uploaded ? it has some great strategies

  • Reciting the alphabet, exaggerating the sounds, repeatedly so she can see your mouth movements. Might help

  • My 4 year old had delayed speech problems too. I found that just talking to him and encouraging him to talk back, was immense help. I read him heaps of books, involving him by asking questions on each page. Sesame Street and Play School were good too as they have lots of singing and join in games

  • Articulation Station is a great App that our speech therapist told us about. (picture of a bee)

  • Heads and shoulders knees and toes. Alphabet, Indy windy spider.

  • does she use the tablet? singing is always good

  • We had a hearing appointment the other day and my daughters hearing has come back (she’s loses it and regains it) and it’s almost back to normal. Just has a slight blockage in the right ear. She has been moved into the bigger room in kinder and her speech has improved greatly. We still have a lot of work infront of us to get her speech to where it should be but I’m not stressed out to where I was when I first posted this. Thank you all for your imput.

  • I am glad you have got an appt. That is a start in getting the wheels turning.
Can you get her to say one word at a time you can use picture story books just naming the pictures – things like cat dog ball hat or sometimes you can get cards with pictures with the words on them as well. Another option is to use things like fork spoon or anything that is any easy word to say. Once she starts talking properly she probably won’t stop. Our youngest (nearly) has perfect hearing but we still have trouble understanding some words. Does she try to ask for things she wants or just point? It is hard sometimes not to anticipate what they want and just give it to them. Ours both went through a stage of taking us to what they wanted and just pointed. We had to tell them to use their words. Has she been going to Childcare at all? The staff at them are wonderful in encouraging little ones to use their words. I realise that may not be an option for you. I recently met a young couple whose little girl goes to Childcare one day a week. They said that although the Mum spent plenty of time playing and talking to their daughter she had learnt so much more in the couple of months she had been going there. THey may have opted for it because the Mum was pregnant with her 2nd baby and was having health issues not linked to her pregnancy at all. I hope your daughter makes progress even before she has the grommets inserted. It is a quick Day Surgery procedure so with any luck you won’t need to stay at the hospital for long

  • speech therapist, my twin boys would not talk and talked gibberish that only they could understand, the gp referred us to a therapist at the local public hospital and we had several appointments, after the first appointment she had given me tips and their was an improvement, it took time but eventually they were sorted out, it is better to commence the process now than wait for grommets because you are just delaying the inevitable. there is heaps of info on google but it does not take the place of a trained therapist who can give you and your child individual advice for their own issues. do not delay

  • It is a urgent referral and I’ve got an appointment next week with the health nurse so I’m hoping she can give me other answers/options. She loves playing with the ipad so I’ll see if there’s an games that could help her.

  • not sure sorry but my 3 r old learns a lot from playing with the tablet/watching you tube. have you spoken to your child health nurse? you should be able to get free speech therapy (if your in/near a city?) and being 3, it should be an urgent referral
