Hello!

Just wondering what you spend on food/household products/pets each shop (to try to get an average amount)? My son has allergies so it’s much more expensive to buy food but it just seems to be so expensive. We can’t keep spending this much as our budget is really tight.

  • We are a family of 6 ( one with allergies, one in nappies) and have 2 dogs and we spend around $250 a week but will sometimes get extra bread milk or fruit etc toward the end of the week. I try and meal plan as much as possible.

  • Ours is about $100-150 a week for two adults and Bub. We meal plan, shop to specials and only buy what is on our list.

  • A friend of mine has 4 cats ( used to have 6 ) and says the cat litter she needs to get constantly is very expensive and is on a tight budget as her hub is unemployed and lives with her mum . I think it is great to have pets but if it was a choice to cut down your food supplies or pets , I think it is better to have only 1 or 2 animals in the house . Even though it is a personal choice, sacrifices do have to be made at some stage to make ends meet.

  • I try and keep our food budget to $150 a week but it doesn’t always work!

  • yes you have got a lot of good answers on here. hope that these are helpful to you

  • normally between 150-200 a week for a family of 4, but that includes nappies and formula at the moment. last week we had to get some essentials ie. toothpaste, deodorant and it cost $300!

  • We as a family of 2+2 teens, a vegan, a vegetarian, and 2 ‘normals’, average spend $100-$120 per week on main shop, and average $25 on top ups during the week. This includes a heavy fish diet, vegan and vegetarian specialty foods, and non or low processed & low sugar food items, and most meals are made from scratch. Our 2 teens take healthy lunches to school every day, plus Home Ec requirements, and we all eat more than min daily recommended requirements of fruits and vege. We search the specials, home brands, bulk buys etc and average it out each week, and stay in one car park. Moving to many different shopping centers just wastes petrol money, the car and time, unless they are on the same road.

  • around $200-$230 a fortnight. i can do it on $170 though. i give myself this budget for a family of 2 adults 3 kids. i find that every 2 months, i can not shop for a fortnight and get to save that money as a bonus

  • I spend $70 a fortnight on groceries for two (adult & child). I tend to limit what I buy to fresh produce / vegetables / fruits, meat and dairy as well as bread. All non essential items such as processed foods are off the list. You could always try growing your own herbs and vegetables.

  • About $250 a week – we don’t have much competition here & certainly no stores like Aldi etc so the prices are a bit higher than in the southern states

  • $150 – $200 weekly for our family of 4.

  • $150 – $200 weekly for our family of 4 as my son is a fussy eater – but the price is broken up over quite a few different shops too as I shop the specials!

  • I spend around $120 for my family of 5 including nappies and household essentials. I stock up when things are half price or on good specials, I go to the fruit shops, I also go to the butchers or wholesalers for meat and buy in bulk and freeze, I also cut back on the processed food such as chips, muesli bars, and other junky type food. It is really a juggling act to make it work but when you don’t have enough you make do.

  • I normally spend about $350 on the weekly grocery shop. It is quite expensive if you have to buy meat and fish.

  • We have a budget of $350 for the fortnight. Thats for 2 adults and three children.

  • We are a family of 5. We spend approx $140-$180 and includes everything including nappies. We make a strict meal plan and go to fruit shops as they are usually 29c for a avocado instead of 2 for $4 at coles etc. We buy our meat in bulk from super butcher.

  • I was spending $250 aweek and that’s just for me a two kids now my payments have been cut I guess I will be rebudgeting which will prove hard good luck

  • $200-$250 a week for family of 4 and a pet. I go to ALDI to do the bulk of my shop and then Coles for the rest. This also includes fuel for the week and any layby payments. I do a lot of baking so I don’t need to buy school snacks. We also have menu planner so I know what I am buying and don’t add random things to my shop.

  • $400 a week :(

  • I spend between 200-300 a fortnight for 2 adults and 1 toddler plus the dog.. I shop at Coles and the spud shed and buy meat etc when marked down and throw straight in the freezer. My partner has leftovers for lunch most days :)
