When the soccer season starts my kids can be doing up to 3-4 nights training and then game on Saturday, in the off season the youngest kids have been hitting the skate parks for hours on end or bikeriding and the oldest he does lots of bikeriding and the second eldest he does a lot of practising soccer off season with his mates .
We are a very busy family with me working 2 jobs & we have a race team. Our eldest is enrolled in Junior Ju Jitsu. He loves it & so do we! He does it after school once a week.
Maybe a bit different but my 7yo boy is always doing something sometimes there is an overlap in sports. So he does judo once a week & auskick twice a week which has now finished and he is about to start aussie hoops basketball and milo cricket which over lap by about 3-4 weeks. So at this stage really only twice a week.
My kids have one outside school sporting interest, one they don’t do at school. It would be too hard for me to get them to training, practice, games if they did more then that
By the age of nine you can pretty safely leave that decision up to your kids, let them choose what after school activities they are interested in. Sport is great for kids, not only is it healthy but it promotes healthy social interactions and can even help develop a health psychological foundation
My 9 year old son does soccer in winter and t-ball in summer. My niece who is 9 does netball, t-ball and little athletics. If my son wasn’t a sports kid, I would still try and encourage him to do at least one throughout the year and maybe something that they were interested in as well, such as chess club, book club, craft club or something, I think sport is important for children, it teaches them team spirit, confidence, as well as keeping fit and healthy.
My boys both play footy (3 days per week) and basketball (2 nights per week). One of my sons is nine and the other is 12. My 9 year old also does drums once per fortnight and my 12 year does guitar and junior fire brigade.
Only what they want to do and what you are able to afford and give the time to yourself.
My eldest did Dance, Swimming (which required being at the pool bright and early before school with my younger two in tow…i was quite relieved when she decided to move on to surfing), surfing and modeling.
My other two were really not interested in doing any sports or after school activities.
We do one sport only! I think this is perfectly fine. Not all kids like traditional sport. As long as they get plenty of exercise it doesn’t matter. Walking and playing is good too.
My 10yr old daughter has done everything from tennis, swimming, hockey, athletics, netball and tae kwon do to touch football…sport is great for kids, physically, socially and mentally!
I personally think 1 sport or activity out of school is enough. When you think about how much other things we want them to do. Usually even the 1 activity involves more than one afternoon ie: soccer might have 1-2 nights of training then a game on the weekends. Homework after school perhaps visit family on weekends and you want to make sure you are spending enough time together as a family. But once you start you will know whats best for her.
i asked my kids to check out what their friends were doing and see if they wanted to join them. Netball was fun for a while then swimming and dancing. I think one outside of school sport is great and we did Scouts and Girl Guides too. My kids went for as long as it was fun.
