Hello!

Is it just me or are supermarkets getting dodgier and dodgier with their markdowns? I get that they need to make money, but lets face it, they are rolling in that enough as it is!
Now, they are waiting later and later to mark down their meat and fresh produce to the point where it is simply being thrown out. In the midst of this cost of living crisis, where some people are struggling to buy food I find this disgusting!
To be more specific, the day before meat is due to expire, they mark it down to as little as 20c off. Who would even bother with such a small discount when the food is so close to expiry? Why, when they can pay 20c more and maybe get something that has a week on it? The day of expiry, they are now waiting until around 6pm to mark down meat. This is if they get around to it, as I have seen instances where food hasn’t been marked all the way down, has expired and is still on shelf the next day. There really needs to be some kind of reform into this kind of behaviour from supermarkets.

  • I don’t bother with mark-downs any more as I don’t have time to wait around to find out when they will be marked down. Seems a different day every week.

  • Lucky to even see markdowns at our locals these days. I remember working in woolworths bakery at 17 and we were allowed to markdown bread to 20c if needed. Now they don’t markdown baked goods at all

  • I agree, I do mine online now and shop both Coles & Woolies to get all the specials.

  • I hear you but I’ve also read that some do that because they also donate products to local food banks etc. Our locals are the same, even day of it’s like 20c off. Others I’ve seen online mark down TO 20c not BY 20c.

  • Just doesn’t seem worth it anymore. I also feel like the rotisserie chicken isn’t marked down until after 8.30pm. Such a shame as its an easy dinner option.

  • Along with meat; I have found other online only specials. The majority of our shopping is done at the fresh food market and they have markdowns at the end of the day; it is a combination of online and the market for our food shopping.

  • I agree with some of the comments below. I try and do my shopping online as you get better deals and can easily see what is cheaper from the comfort of your home instead of wondering around the shops to find the marked down pricing. I have found they are getting sneaker and sneaker and some markdowns aren’t actually mark downs. I try not to buy anything full price these days and have really gotten savvy with the way i shop now.

  • I buy online meat specials and get better deals instead of trying to locate markdowns.

  • I agree, they’re simply greedy in my opinion

  • I definitely agree! Then you see notices where they have ‘cut the prices’ on certain grocery items to ‘help out’. Really? Let’s reduce something that we increased in price by $2.00 by 50c… Wow…

  • I’ve noticed this too with meat markdowns at Woolies & Coles. Use by that day and only a quarter off. They used to be much bigger discounts.

  • I’ve noticed the same. Why would you get a pack of mince that’s best before that day at a 40c discount. It’s not even worth taking up space in the freezer. Then pitiful discounts of 50c off ‘specials’. The joke is on us, hey.
