Hello!

“Hi! Just wanting your thoughts (please!!)- I am due next month with baby #3 & I’m wondering if I should swaddle or not. My 1st child we swaddled just in wraps for a few months but then put her into a sleeping bag, my 2nd had complications after his birth so spent the first week laying with nothing but a nappy in his NICU crib & seemed quiet happy but when we got back on the ward the nurse told me I HAD to swaddle him & she kept coming & wrapping him, we bought him a love to swaddle wrap & it was brilliant but it took us til he was 9 months old to finally wean him off wearing one! So baby #3 the question is to swaddle or not to swaddle?! (It is very cold in winter where we live-gets into the minus overnight so swaddling does help keep bub warm at least) I’ve been reading what I can find on the pros & cons but they seem to contradict each other!!” What is better? Swaddling or not swaddling?

  • Depends on the baby. Some of them seem to hate being swaddled, others love it.

  • Some babies like to be wrapped as it makes them feel secure. Others hate having their arms restricted. my eldest niece hated it. Within 2 days she was trying to ger her arms loose and would wriggle around for up to 1/2 hour until she exhausted herself. She was wrapped in a baby blanket. If you do choose to swaddle make sure it is not too tight from their waist down as you can damage your baby’s hips etc. They used an old style sleeping bag that looked like a long dressing down that was switched closed at the bottom. You can buy them without sleeves with a slit for the baby carseat belt or the same applies to a capsule

  • I was told to swaddle as its supposed to make baby feel safe and secure, just like in the womb. I tried it for a while, but he manages to squirm out of it and I don’t think he really enjoyed it. So wait til baby is born and see how you go

  • I was also confused about swaddling because everything I read and heard said that swaddling was THE thing to do. But I was rubbish at swaddling! And I couldn’t notice much of a difference in my baby when I swaddled and when I didn’t! I think that if you can do it and do it right, and your baby seems to enjoy it – then do it! Go with the flow.

  • I really think it’s personal choice, there are pros and cons to all sides, I swaddled mostly because we have the same weather as you but a summer baby I wouldnt

  • Your bub will let you know what they like too! ;)

  • Some bubs will be swaddled and some just will not; depends on the little person.

  • The swaddling is great and remember every baby is different

  • Both of my bubs absolutely LOVED being swaddled. My suggestion wold be to be guided by your bub.

  • Hope the advice below helped. I never swaddled – neither of mine liked it. They still kick their sheets of at night.

  • I swaddled all my kids, I think it helped them to sleep better.

  • I love swaddling my babies, and did so until about 14 months

  • Every baby is different, go with the flow

  • See what your baby prefers

  • I don’t think it really matters to be honest. My son hated to be swaddled, he slept better without it. Do what feel right for each individual bub, they’re all different.

  • Swaddle. Its what calms them

  • I would swaddle for at least the first couple months :-)

  • I swaddled for the first few months as it makes Baby’s feel more secure ;-)

  • I hope all went well with bubs. Did he end up wanting to be swaddled?

  • Some babies love it and some don’t. Go with what YOUR baby prefers.
