Hello!

I’m a first time mum and I am planning to go back to work in a month’s time but would like to continue breastfeeding. Does anyone have any tips?

  • I agree with mum 103920. Invest in a good breast pump and storage system and pump at work at times baby would feed. And keep evening, night and morning feeds up on the breast

  • We get lactation breaks at work – one woman’s husband bought the baby in and another expressed, kept it in a cooler bag with a brick in the work fridge

  • Congratulations on wanting to continue breastfeeding at work. I successfully breastfed 3 children whilst working full time. It took a little coordination but was very rewarding. I had a little esky with a sealed jug which held my breast pump soaking in Milton solution, and my spare sterilised bottles and ice packs. I arranged with work to have access to a quiet room I could lock and express in comfort, and stored the expressed milk in the work fridge (labelled so that no one else touched it). I expressed at about the same time baby was due for a feed, and hubby could tell me how much baby was drinking so that as baby grew, I could express slightly larger feeds. This kept me in rhythm with baby for weekend feeds and helped prevent me from being engorged. When baby started solids, the frequency of feeds decreased until eventually I wasn’t expressing during work hours, but could still enjoy the night time and breakfast breastfeeds. I certainly recommend investing in a quality manual breast pump and with speaking with your child health nurse about safe storage of expressed milk in the fridge and freezer. Best of luck.

  • I work 7 hr days and just express before and after. bub is 7 mth now
    I only work 2 days a week

  • See if your work has a policy on breaks – mine did which meant I didn’t just have to use my lunch break. Use a private space to express – and express enough to keep supply up.

  • How old is your baby? How many feeds per day? If the baby is older, like 1 year, it is easier as they have less feeds, so you may only need to express once. If your work doesn’t have an expressing room, try to organise a spare office or something to express in (depending on what type of work you do). Best of luck

  • Talk to you hr about having a room to express in, you can then get special ziplock bags to store the milk in and refrigerate or even freeze when your at work , medulla swing is a great portable pump and you can get the bags with the pump
