Hello!

“Help Mom, I need some opinions on thumb sucking please… The other day a woman told me that if my child continued to suck their thumb they would end up with buck teeth! Is this true or should I ignore her? Thanks!” Do you have any tips for thumb sucking ?

  • It can actually move their teeth. I would maybe try sticking band aids on her thumb to stop her sucking.

  • I hope your little one stopped, it can push their teeth forward

  • Hope you had some answers here.

  • I have heard this is true but unsure best to take your child for a checkup at your dentist and ask them. You use to be able to buy liquid to paint onto the childs fingernails to stop the thumb sucking but look into this to make sure it is safe to use.My kids never sucked their thumbs Good luck

  • Thanks heaps ! Wondering this myself.

  • this is true you only need to ask your dentist to find that out,my children sucked their thumb one still does and she is 8 an we constantly have to tell her to take it out. Best stop it as soon as you can before the second teeth come threw

  • What missmilf09? Throw out her childs’ thumbs?

  • I don’t believe it. I know kids who sucked their thumbs but have perfect teeth. I never sucked my thumb, never had a dummy or bottle, was breastfed until 2 then went straight to a cup – I had bucked teeth. My siblings had dummies, their teeth were close to perfect.

  • There is always braces if needed

  • That’s just an old myth

  • I think its an old wives tale they will eventually grow out of it

  • He will grow out of it

  • She is full of herself thumb sucking does not cause buck teeth that’s an old wives tale your child is fine :D

  • My two year old sucks his thumb and at the moment the comfort he gets from that (at bedtime and when he’s unsure about something) outweighs any concern I have about his teeth. I suggest regular check-up’s at the dentist to keep an eye on it. There are devices that help get them to stop if that’s what you want too. Have a look at thumbsout.com.au (they have a Facebook page too)

  • Im pretty sure its an old wive’s tale!

  • wen bub is sleeping throw them all out

  • I suppose it depends on the child about buck teeth. I sucked my thumb till 11 and yet I have really good teeth. I swapped thumb sucking to sleeping with a teddy. Now days I sleep with a body pillow and I’m not pregnant either. So basically they will outgrow it and latch on to another habit.

  • im not sure all my kids sucked there thumbs an there teeth r fine.

  • My cousin used to suck on his thumb and quite often with his blanky over his thumb as a child. He has the worst set of buck teeth I have ever seen and he’s now in his 40’s. He was often teased at school with them too.

  • My little girl used to suck her thumb all the time, we tried everything to no avail. Eventually she stopped herself, at about 5yo. She has beautiful teeth and has never needed braces. Don’t worry too much.
