Hello!

I have two daughters 2 yrs & 1yr. I need some tips on good eating habits. Also for both toilet training for the elder one and getting the younger one off breast feeding. Would it be the wrong time to do weaning while teething? And is 1 year a good age for toilet training or is it too early? Nothing is actually working because of small age gap between the two. Please give me some magic tips to make my life easier!

  • Cutting down on breastfeeding when your little one is teething might not be the best moment, I would probably wait till afterwards.
I personally think a 1yr old is a bit young for toilet training, but you could start with some toilet timing or just get her used to sit on the potty. You could start with your 2yr old when she shows signs to be ready.
As for good eating tips I just did breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and early dinner. No junk, just beautiful healthy food and besides milk, water as drink

  • I was told the best time to toilet train is the summer around 2yrs but can be later if they are not interested. They need to be interested and make a commitment to do it. Some people claim their children were using the toilet at 9 mths but I question this!

  • I would just start substituting bottles every second feed and start putting pants on your little one and sitting them on the toilet ivery hour or so

  • there are some good comments here

  • 1 mgiht be too young but if shes showing signs then give it a shot

  • Have you tried any of the great ideas beneath? Any working? Would love to know.

  • Every child is different when it comes to toilet training. My first was three before she showed real commitment and interest in it. My two year old however is already showing interest. I can’t imagine having trained them any earlier than two.
In regards to healthy eating, kids love ‘snacky bite sized’ foods, so focus on finding or creating heathy options. My kids love grapes, or fruit loaf. Apricot balls are also a great option.

  • A one year old is only toilet timed not trained, they little brain doesn’t comprehend properly yet, and I would leave the weaning until the tooth comes through that is cutting and then wean

  • Toilet training routine and no pull ups! Go straight to pants! Much easier as they learn much quicker if they can feel it. Routine is the key wake up after food try sitting on potty. Reward I used water ice blocks as a reward in shape of ducks n fish just ice trays. Some times juice in them. Helps keep them hydrated and is fun. Make it fun !

  • This is a preciously tricky time that will pass all too quickly, I personally wouldn’t try to wean bub while she is teething, cut her feeds down and offer a bottle if she is hungry but dont withhold the comfort feeds if she demands them. Have a broad fresh diet that you can all eat, not only is it easier on you as you wont have to prepare as much but everyone will feel equal! as for toilet training I just used a little toilet seat that was placed on the normal toilet, one may be a little young but they will want to copy everything you do and this will also come naturally, pull up nappies are great training pants, use positive gentle encouragement and dont make too much of a fuss over accidents (but be prepared to poopie dance the successes down the loo!)

  • maybe diet wise try to get them to eat whatever you are eating. No need to prepare separate meals…

  • My daughter was 2 and 3 months when we started toilet training her, and my twin daughters are 2, so in a couple of months we are going to start on them

  • I think one is to early. Both my kids were toilet trained at 2. I feel thats a good age

  • My kids didn’t toilet train till they showed me the signs they were ready. If you go to early you train yourself not them. My youngest was 3 when he started. Was trained day and night in 3 weeks because he was ready. Go too soon and you will create more work not lessen it.

  • Your children are still very young so I wouldn’t be in too much of a hurry with toileting or weaning until you are ready. As for feeding, they are both old enough to have what you are having cut into smaller portions. I used to cut up a few kgs of vegetable sticks (yes, kgs!) and either steam them at dinner time or give them to my older child with homus for a snack – it saved heaps of time (didn’t save on the clean up though – that was always bad no matter what I served!)

  • When my kids hit one we fed them the same food we were eating. We all sat at the table and we ate our food with out any problems. If they see Mum and dad eating something they are always wanting that. This sets them up to not be fussy eaters. Also I decided what they were going to eat. I never asked them. That sets you up for fussy eaters. Let them choose between two treats at the end of the day or when they are out somewhere. Toilet training depended upon the child’s development. One was toilet trained early and one was three. I think they must be toilet trained by three though.

  • Sorry, forgot the good eating habits tips. My toddler is a grazer and I find it hard to get him to eat well. Just recently I have been making him smoothies with bananas, frozen berries, oats, yoghurt and a little honey with milk and he’s loving them. There are lots of great ideas in the “real Recipes” section on here for toddlers (and lots of smoothie recipes too). Some find making food faces and different shaped sandwiches etc help encourage toddler to eat.

  • My first 2 are only 12.5 months apart so I know what you mean about wanting tips to make life easier!

My 2 year 9 month old son has just toilet trained. His older brother was over 3 and his sister was around 2.5. It depends on the child but I honestly think that 1 year old is too early, and would wait until at least 2 when they are more aware of bowel movements and also have the language and understanding to be successful. There are many children who have been trained earlier but generally, 2.5-3 years is the common age. My son just “clicked” a few weeks back and has trained easily with very few accidents, and I think it’s because he was really ready (rather than just me being ready)

Weaning is a very personal thing and totally up to you. You’ve done brilliantly feeding this long, so just do what feels right for you and your child! Good luck!
