Hello!

I am a night owl – I force myself to bed early but don’t sleep well. The only time I sleep well is when I go to bed at 2am and sleep till noon. So my mornings until noon are full of a lot of grunts, pointing and mumbled answers. I take quite a few vitamins, have tried meditation, coffee, exercise etc etc (the old adage of if you are tired enough you will sleep doesn’t apply here – I hardly slept for 8 weeks through ARMY Basic and they keep you hopping from 3am till 8:30pm every day except Sunday when you get 1/2 a day off). (Oh and my doc says “You are just a night person – some peoples clocks are set that way”) Do any mums out there have a tried and true wake up routine or fix?

  • Also give up caffeine if u can 🙂 its a stimulant and could be affecting u in the evening causing u to struggle tonsleep (even if you haven’t had any since morning)

  • I am a night owl and have really struggled with a toddler that wakes up at 6:30 or earlier some days. Reading before bed makes me feel sleepy

  • Wish I could help but that sounds like me

  • I have heard that if you go camping or similar for a week and wake/sleep according to the natural light (go to bed when it is dark & wake when it is light) then you can reset your body clock. I guess you would have to try to keep it going at home after as well by reducing your use of artificial light. (Could save on electricity!!)

  • I’m a night owl but since having kids I can’t stay up and then sleep in as they wake between 5-6am. So at 9.30/10pm I turn on white noise to help me go to sleep.

  • I so feel your pain, I love to stay up late 🙁

  • No caffeine or sugar after lunch time plus a run of around 5km helps me get to bed and get to sleep.

  • Note the time… I am in the same boat as you, but as a couple of the other mums have said I have found that I do sleep better if I have been up early in the morning or if I exercise through out the day.
Sometimes it also helps if I have a nice warm shower before bed and lie down with a book or magazine until my eyes get tired…
The best wake up I have found is to set the alarm 3 times… Snoozing the first two and making it a rule to get up on the third… It’s often a struggle to get up but I find once I am moving and have a little caffeine in me, everything seems a lot better 🙂

  • I stopped having any caffeine after lunch (incl. Chocolate at 3pm) and have had to force myself to bed. I still stay awake for a long while some nights but I am a lot better than what I was. I also have a sleepy time tea (herbal) about 1/2 before bed (or in bed) and I found exercise was a great help. I think the reason I have gone backwards is because I am waiting for a tear in my hip cartilage to be fixed and I can’t do my normal exercise including running.

Good luck with it and set up a routine before bed (like with a child 🙂 ) and see how that goes.

  • I am exactly the same. I started taking natures own sleep easy and it definitely made a difference, but the biggest difference was when I committed to exercising every day. By 10pm I am exhausted and ready for bed, which is completely unlike me. Give it a go if you can!

  • I am the same. The night is the only time I get to myself when everyone is asleep. Ut I go to bed late and am tired all morning, sometimes all day. So I set a time and go to bed by then every night. I turn of my tablet an hour before as the backlit is supposed to keep you up. I write lists of the things I need to remember to get it off my mind. I also take something to help me sleep. But if I stay up all night I can’t get up in the morning , so the set time helps. It’s a struggle at first but eventually you get into a routine. Try starting slowly instead of 2 go to bed at 1.45 after a week or so make it 1.30 and so on. It helps your body adjust. Sometimes if I can’t sleep in bed I try to clear my mind by clearing out any images and picture sinking black wrapping warming around me. Sometimes that helps too.

  • I worked permanent night duty for 6 years. Ever since then I find I can not get to sleep before 11pm. Some how my body just wakes me at 6am in the morning. My doctor recently put me on endep – which I read is an anti-depressant ( I wonder if he thinks I am depressed?) – to help me sleep at night as I suffer from pulsatile tinnitus ( where you hear your heart beating – only occurs when I am lying down). But I must say that when I do hit the sack around 11pm, it has helped me have a rather restful sleep.

  • I was you…..until I started forcing myself up at 7am and I have found it easier to go to bed earlier (yes 12am was earlier for me). I tried sleeping tablets but they didnt work for me (I could take 4 temazepan and still stay awake). So the only thing I could try was sleep training myself. This means I give myself a wake up time and I get up at that time regardless of how much sleep I have had. and then I dont sleep until bed time.

I know people say dont read or watch TV before bed because it stimulates the mind. However I have found if I go to bed at 9pm and read a book, I am ready to sleep around 10.30-11.00pm which is MUCH better on my system than 2-4am which was my usual sleep time.
