Hello!

Hi, I am after some tips for toilet training a 2.5 year old boy!? He will do wees in the toilet but absolutely positively refuses to do a poo! I have rewards for him sitting up on the shelf that he really really wants but it just isn’t enough to persuade him to do his poos on the toilet. Any ideas would be welcomed!!

  • Don’t make it an issue, it will come in time. Praise him for all the wees on the toilet. Take pressure of poos on the toilet.
There are great video’s on YouTube kids and we used to watch those. Model the right behaviour without too much fuss about it.

  • totally normal. Sometimes there is regression even once they have mastered it! I didn’t use a reward chart at all. Sometimes there are fears associated with number 2 so rule that out first eg pain, falling down the toilet, the whole “poo” thing. If you havent already, give access to a potty to do the poo on. Sometimes it just feels that little bit more stable/less threatening. My biggest learning curve was not to keep them on there until they poo but rather try to catch it and if you don’t never scold just happily say “oh dear we will get it on the toilet next time wont we? Just like a big boy!” it seriously worked once it was made to be less of a big deal. good luck!

  • Lots of ideas for me here… Thank you everyone!

  • I told my son very 1/2 hr to the toluet got a week and it work

  • Maybe try pooing in a potty before we go straight to the loo.

  • he will go eventually, it is a funny feeling for them and if they get a hard poo and it hurts they will try and keep it in. give him plenty of water and just keep encouraging him

  • have u had any luck :) :) :) :)

  • so many good tips for toilet training …. How is he going now?

  • How is he going now?

  • so many good tiips for toilet training

  • how did you go? :)

  • Hope you found the answer you were looking for.

  • Good luck with him and I hope that you find out a way in which he can do them in the toilet

  • What did you end up doing?

  • How are you going now?

  • And if he is around kids his age – like at day care etc – and see other kids going, helps too.

  • I think they get scared when it comes to the poo’s in the loo. More time and encouragement is all he needs.

  • It can take a little longer for them to do poos in the toilet sometimes, it seems to be a common problem. He’ll get there, just keep reminding him, and be patient.

  • My son likes to read a book on the toilet when he has a poo. Maybe that would help as poos can take time and its pretty boring sitting on the toilet with nothing to do.

  • A small portable toilet his size would be a start
