Hello!

My daughter is 2.5yo. We had decided it was time to start toilet training, and there were the signs you look for. A week in and we have had no success, she refuses to sit on the toilet, she just stands there and wets herself and happily takes her undies off and gets a new pair, doesn’t care about the mess. She hasn’t once had a successful trip to the toilet. Could it be too early? Should we just give up and wait a bit longer or is there something I am missing?

  • Maybe your little one has a fear for the toilet ? In which case I would start with the potty. Take the time for little steps. First aim is happy to sit on the potty / toillet, start with 1 moment (for example before bath) and then expand. Do not show frustration, be happy with every little step. Wishing you patience and understanding.

  • I would maybe put it on the back burner fir a little while and try again later. I don’t think 2.5 years old is too early, especially if she was showing signs. You could have misread the signs tho or she’s just not ready.

  • I think it’s never too early to toilet train. Unfortunately I didn’t get the hint and still having problems at 3yo

  • Never too early

  • how is she going now

  • there are some good comments here

  • Keep persisting, she will get the concept eventually!

  • I agree with the ladies here. After a week, you should definitely be having SOME success. Try again in a few months.

  • I wish the best of luck with the toilet training

  • Id say too early! Give it a couple of months an try again.

  • I hope its going well

  • Will be thinking about starting mine soon too so appreciate the advice as well.

  • Some good advice below. Hope all goes well with the toilet training.

  • how did it work out?

  • It is never too young to start them.

  • You could try a sticker board and everytime she goes give her a sticker and if she gets so many in a row she can earn a prize.

  • All of mine trained by 2 yrs old. Honestly think leaving a nappy on them for afternoon nap makes them think its ok to wet it. Start by letting them wear towelling pants around the house all day. They hold the poo in if they have an accident and you can hose them clean if they do. I always got my child up to go to the toilet before I went to bed at night too. I hated wet beds anything to stop that.

  • It is hard to know, but she sounds like a potty girl maybe. I would put her on the potty just after breakfast and after having a drink. Let her watch cartoons or read some books while she sits there. If she does do something make out that it is the biggest and best exciting thing ever. If you make such a big deal out of it and tell her how wonderful she is, she may do it more often for you. If you continue to not make any progress, I would leave it for a month and try again.

  • tryin to get my 2.5yr boy off diapers…after shower bringsme a diaper and refuses the underwear, i think he find it hard to take on and off…he will wee in tiolet…but refuses to sit…think he needs a potty!

  • Its def not too early. Try a fun looking potty. Take it into every room she goes to and make a fuss and song and dance everytime she shows interest in it or sits on it. Sit her dollys on it or buy a doll that has a potty and play with that. Try the once apon a potty video on youtube or the app – it explains everything in a cute cartoon. Good Luck! https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/once-upon-a-potty-girl/id439281818
