Hello!

I find that whenever my kids (or my partner for that matter) have any spare time, they all want to sit in front of either the computer, the iPods or the TV. Do other mums worry about this? What have other mums done to mix things up a bit more?

  • My teenagers certainly do, however lately my son (15yr) is a lot out on the road with the kids in our street. They all got roller skates for Xmas and they’re having daily a blast on the road. We take our youngest 2 kids out to the park a lot and we do also quite a bit of games

  • Yes!!! My partner has days off and all he does is sit in front of a screen. He switches from the iPad to his mobile phone to the television. I’ve nagged and bagged him about it. He reckons he works hard and deserves to do nothing on his days off. If only that worked both ways, I don’t get any days to do nothing

  • My son is definitely heading that way so we’ve allocated device time and make him play outside or in his room with his toys before he’s allowed that device time

  • That’s all I see on here. Mums asking for advice on iPads……for 1 year olds! Get your kids outside as often as you can, do things as a family too

  • it’s all about moderation and you will know when they need to get outside

  • we limit the time spent on computer ipad etc if its a nice day there is no reason to be sitting inside playing computer games

  • We try to have planned outside activities, and at one stage had a ban on all electronics between certain times of the day. I know some people have whole days where electronics aren’t used, like tech free Tuesday…

  • We try to go out a few times a week. Wildlife parks, feeding the ducks, the park, strawberry picking, library anywhere. Keep the kids busy outdoors because I don’t want everything revolving around technology

  • We have a day where we go somewhere out of the house as a family, away from majority of technology. A playground, animal park, bush walk, etc. Sometimes we use a piece of technology with a GPS and do an activity called Geocaching, but it is still family based.

  • Introduce a curfew of when the modem gets turned off at night. If there is any homework that requires the internet, it’s up to them to manage their time and do it before curfew!

  • I think they need technology to keep up in this world

  • try to limit your kids computer time, say only an hr a day or less

  • I limit my daughter to how much time she can spend on the computer and watching tvu each day.

  • I think we are all the same these days. I worry communication face to face is suffering due to communication on social media being so prevalent.

  • Argh, I hear you ! My husband walks in the door and goes straight to the computer and eBay , and spends all weekend doing the same thing and I detest it. Both of my boys ( 3&1 ) copy him and are always trying to get iPhones and iPads to do the same. Parents are the examples so I make sure that my hubby or I make the time to do something different. Last night we fired up the chiminea in the backyard and roasted marshmallows for the boys, which they loved ! At 6:30 EVERYTHING is turned off, and we all sit together in the lounge for family time before bed. I find the boys are happier with that than watching tv or a computer . In this day and age it has to be a conscious effort because technology is a huge part of our everyday lives and it’s easy to just go with what works.

  • We have a no technology policy at home after 8pm. No phones, iPads or TV’s! It has improved everyones sleep and helps you wind down for the day!!

  • We try to only have 1 hr screen time a day for our 2 and 4 yr old – ipads, tv, laptops etc. I can imagine it will get harder as they get older

  • Same in my house too but only night time. If day time, Many activity we can do such as gardening, walking, go to library or my son ride his bike in front yard.

  • I think most families are the same these days, as long as they get outdoors and have other activities I don’t mind at all

  • My children are involved in a lot of organised sports so I’m abit less worried about their screen time but occasionally their screens become “lost” until chores and homework and good old fashioned play is carried out first.
