Hello!

Hi. I’m not sure if this has been asked before nor do i know if this is the right place to ask this but i was wondering if i could get other mums opinions on this topic. My daughter is 7, i was speaking to my neighbour the other day and she mentioned that her 7 yo daughter knows about menstration and womens products. I thought this odd but when i mentioned it to my husband he said it makes sense as girls are developing early these days. What im interested in knowing is what age other mums have told/will tell their daughters about periods etc.  Thanks very much for reading this

  • I would say by age 8, the sooner they know the better. It is something completely normal and best to educate them early. As long as they are mentally ready to retain the information.

  • Yes – I just had this conversation with my Miss 7 last week.

  • Age appropriate. Some kids are more mature than others. I’d wait and see if she asks but about ten I’d approach the subject.

  • I would think at either nine or ten years of age. That way if they see a spot of blood on their underwear they won’t panic and will understand what is happening.

  • With some children developing earlier than others I would say around 11 years of age.
There would be nothing more terrifying for a young lady than discovering she had gotten her first period with no knowledge of what it is.
Have little growing up talks every 3 months or so to prepare her for what she may be going through soon.

  • Terrific advice! There really interesting comments on this!

  • My daughter had her first period at age 10 :0 So my hand was kind of forced. I had hoped I’ld gave a few more years before I did the period talk :/

  • I think eight or nine. I’ve known girls aged ten close to eleven who have got it. It’s a healthy good subject relevant to females. Don’t be scared of it ( :

  • A little age appropriate information is a good way to go. Usually most girls will know by about 9 even if you haven’t told them because their friends will tell them. Its best coming from you as you need to develop a relationship where you can talk about development and growing up to prepare for the teen years.

  • My daughter is no where near that age yet. But I would suggest age 10 at the latest as your husband is correct. With all the hormone induced foods etc girl and boys are developing at a much younger age. Maybe you could try finding a movie or something aimed at the younger generation to help explain, when you decide the time is right.

  • They talked about sex ed at my daughters school in grade 6 although she already knew a fair bit around it but I think it was a good time to talk about it as some of the girls had developed quite early. I also got the book ‘Girls Stuff’ by Kaz Cook and gave it to my daughter and so when she got her period at 13 she was all prepared.

  • I think age appropriate information is best when they ask. I don’t have a girl but my boys started asking questions about 7 and my husband and I gave them a bit of information that made sense to them.

  • My daughter had classmates with their period at 9. I think that simple, age appropriate information is the best. She does not need to know, at 7, all the ins and outs of women’s bodies. I’m sure that would terrify most little girls, however, you do need her to be prepared.

  • Probably about 10 when they could be starting soon.

  • I hope you have already tried to talk to her about it

  • These days I would say 9 because some girls get them that early.

  • It depends on the child one of my daughters was only 10 when i told her and she remembered it all a few yrs later. But then my next daughter was 13 and due to her being away for awhile I was unable to talk to her sooner … but I think this was right for her.

  • I think it depends on the situation, in a hose with older sisters 7 may be ok, let your own instincts make the real decisions!

  • Depends on the individual girl , you should know your daughter best .She doesn’t need to know everything at once , over time as appropriate raise in little bits some information.

  • I was going to wait till my 9 yr old was older but my friends daughters all got theirs when they were 8 and 9 (all three) so I thought I had better bring the topic up. I didn’t start till 13 or so but I don’t think it hurts to open the communication on it earlier.
