Hello!

My child is just turned 5, is attending Kindergarten and not yet fluent in knowing and recognising his ABCs. Is this common? Should we be concerned? Is it just a matter of more practice?

  • Chat to his kinder teacher and see what they say. I would also incorporate the abcs daily such as when brushing teeth if it’s something you want to be learned soon. Repetition and consistency can speed it along

  • I found make a game of it, each week pick a letter, practise writing it down, tracing it, look for that letter everywhere you go for letter recognition, cook things starting with that letter ect…then each week change letters and different games ect. Repetition and recognition is key.
They will pick it up at there own pace, everyone’s different how they learn. Don’t put to much stress on it. ????

  • We’ve always struggled with this. The twins ‘got by’ at school but still mixed it up in year 12… I guess it is just a thing. It hasn’t done too much harm – at university studying mathy stuff. Even had a good laugh the other day that the ‘abc song’ was still a struggle … hence “next time wont you sing with me!’ – it could not be done alone without errors!

  • Every child is different. I wouldn’t be too concerned unless you see other learning milestones not being achieved.
My son can sing the ABCs and recognises many letters but he doesn’t know them all, He’s almost 5 and I know a few kids in his kinder who don’t know their letters.

  • Every child is different.
I know a lot of kids who didn’t know much when they were young but excelled by the time they were in year 6!
Try not to compare your child to others as it will come in time and with practice.

  • It really is about practice. Our son knew his ABC’s when he was about 3 or 4, but he loved alphabet puzzles and we often practiced ABC’s etc. with him. And honestly, that’s what Prep is for. Your preschool should guide you on where your child should be at and give you advice.
