A paddling pool or cool bath is great but if you are at home and needing to get things done I put my top under the tap and then wring it out and put it back on and if you have a fan you can stand in front of even better!
I fill up hot water bottles with cold water and put them in the freezer , freeze till firm..don’t over fill though. Once it’s bedtime, put bottle in a pillow case; I like to have one at my feet and one behind my back…If you don’t have a hotwater bottle, gel packs that can be frozen work just as well and I have these for the older children. I put them in a large snapback bag and place that into a small zip up cushion cover.
Wear lightweight cotton clothing and a hat; keep well hydrated; only go out when/if you really have to and stick to the shady side of the street; keep your air con to a reasonable temperature – too cold and you’ll feel the heat more when you do go out; a fan will help circulate the air around the house; keep blinds/curtains closed during the hottest and sunniest parts of the day; sunshades are great for the garden not just the beach – portable shade for both kids and pets; avoid using the over where possible; keep a spray bottle in the fridge to give yourself a cooling spritz; soak your feet in an ice bath; put a cold water bottle in the bed to cool the sheets!
Always carry a water bottle with you to stay hydrated and take small sips often as opposed to waiting longer and then taking larger gulps.
We have a wading pool for the kids and as we don’t have much shade in the back yard we put a sheet up over the clothesline which works nicely!
Light, loose clothing is also very helpful.
Open all the windows over night when the temperature drops, then close them and the blinds once the sun comes up. Sometimes if it is a still night, we will have the windows open but put an oscillating fan on to blow out the hotter air.
stocked freezer with icy cold icy poles, I love to much on cold grapes. Ice in our pets water bowls, curtains closed and a fan on – I need a breeze on hot days or I tend to overheat very quickly. Air con on to take the edge off – we are in for a 38 degree day here in canberra tomorrow – so our plan is air con, water, icy poles and netflix! ( or computer games!)
I also like to keep some curtains closed during the day. It surely makes a difference in temperature. And then fan on. I am not a fan of air conditioning and I almost never use it.
Yes keep blinds/curtain closed as glass gets very hot with the suns rays , When going outdoors, its best to apply sunscreen on face as well and wear cotton clothing which keeps me extra cool. Plenty of water as well and always have a bottle in my bag or car.
Doors and curtains closed and aircon on during the day. Doors and windows open during the night (windscreens locked). Spray bottles of water in the schoolbags. Drink plenty of water. Water fights, sprinklers and paddle pools in the garden and if you have a dive in the pool. Foot baths and cooling lavender cream on your feet.
I fill the paddling pool up with water in a shady spot and my little guy and I spend the afternoon playing out there when it’s hot. I’ll often sit and read a book with my feet in while he plays.
