We usually make them – this year Miss Seven made her own Timmy the dog costume.

My favourite Book Week outfit my daughter wore was as Little Red Riding Hood – very easy to make the red hooded cape and she carried a basket.

My son went as a pirate.

My daughter went one year as Princess Leia from “Star Wars”. Another time as Hermione from “Harry Potter”, then as Nicky from “Thea Stilton” books. Last year as Jolteon from “Pokemon”. She used one old vest of mine, I found a pair of yellow trousers in a charity shop, we bought a yellow hat for 5 dollars, made ears, eyes and nose and attached them to it. Very simple but nice!

My 3yo wanted to go to bookweek as a dalek!! So we used cardboard and made a cylinder dress to make the body and gave her a colander as a hat. Simple and silly but she absolutely loved it

My daughter had to wear dinosaur colours, so greens, grey, black, brown etc. so that was kinda easy (although those colours are more likely in my son’s wardrobe). My son tells me ON the day that he was supposed to dress up (and no note, my daugher had a note). So he had to russell something up. He went as a Ninja from Ninjago.

My sons went in their own clothes and said they were their own characters and will be in one of their own stories one day!!!

My daughter is a school teacher and she was over the moon with a student who had come dressed as the “Paper Bag Princess”, my daughter had read the story to the class a week before book week and the young lass loved the story and character that much she dressed as Princess Elizabeth, easy and cheap yet very wonderful indeed. The best costumes are the ones homemade.

Oh my goodness that’s what my son did. I think it was literally a day before hand. I went to Spotlight directly after work and bought a black hooded cape, a witches hat that looked like the choosing hat from Harry Potter and because spotlight were all sold out of beards I bought some stuffing and elastic and sewed it on to some terry towelling to make a huge Dumbledore beard from Harry Potter and he went as Dumbledore. I had no choice but to make mine as the service at spotlight was incredibly poor and even when I chased several people down they would take me to the products I needed and gave me a series of directions (I had 20 minutes before closing time to get what I needed) and only helped me when I forced them to by asking questions about the product. You would not believe how hard it was to get a metre of elastic cut for me. My grandma asked me why I bought a huge bag of stuffing instead of wadding and I told her it was hard enough to get a piece of elastic at Spotlight. A woman then walked around and systematically told all of the customers it was time to leave the store. It was simply one of the rudest and unhelpful experiences I’ve had as a customer and I would never treat anyone with the contemp I was treated with and like I was being a pain in the backside by asking for some help locating products etc. I sat up all night making his beard. He went to school proud but had I have had access to better products it would have taken me half the time. It was great to see him in his outfit the next day, but I was positively exhausted the next day at work.

My daughter went as Mia from the Princess diaries. It was her excuse to dress up at school. But good fun.

One son wanted to be a character that we managed to pull together from existing clothing … Turned a printed t-shirt inside out to make it plain black…

The other one we bought a costume for that’s big enough to use another year. Previous years we’ve gone crafty with cardboard making masks, shields etc. It can be fun. But with that kind of notice I wouldn’t be jumping through hoops…. But then again our school gives about 3 weeks or more notification of these things,
