Hello!

My son is cutting out his morning sleep & really, really fights not to sleep in the afternoons. He is getting way overtired, then at night he won’t go to sleep either, or if he does it’s only for about 3-4 hrs then wants to play. It’s exhausting so into bed with mum so she can get just a bit of sleep, then he’s up around 6.30-7. He is in no way getting enough sleep, but don’t no what to do.

  • It took along time with our daughter to find something that worked. We had to put a tv in her room and let her fall asleep listening to her favourite movies. It was horrible not being able to sleep so this bought some respite to us


  • Unfortunately; some children sleep more than others. If concerned speak to a community nurse. They can provide some terrific advice and strategies/sanity saver tips!


  • My son also does’t sleep much, as he is always worried he’ll miss out on all the fun. During the day we try to get him to play with other kids and introduce lots of activities. Swimming, dancing to some music, going around the house and asking him to pick up and deliver items to you or other people. Hopefully it’ll tire him out. After dinner we let him have a bit of play then bath then a quiet activity and milk. Most days this will do the job, other days it’s a fight so the other half will give it a go otherwise 5 mins of quiet play and try again. Best of luck.


  • Definitely take him out until he is tired enough to have a nap.
    Also, you could try having a nap with him in the day. It’s ok to sleep with your baby. There is no rule that they need to sleep by themselves.


  • Change his routine a little. Take him out in the mornings to the park. Make him walk around and get some fresh air. Fresh air and sunshine is good for little ones. This will tire him out. If you take a pram he might sleep whilst you push him home or around your neighbourhood. This could work in the afternoons too. Mix it up. Don’t stress it. My kids, I would give them bath time just before bedtime making this a relaxing time nice a warm bath water and then a bottle of milk and off to their bedrooms. I would read to them in their room with a very dim light or a book light. They would fall asleep before I finished the book. Night time it is important to have a calm relaxing home just before bedtime for your son. Turn down your lights put on a lamp. (Warm milk has a calming effect on kids and helps them sleep.) See if a new routine will help Dinner bath-time and Milk and bed with a story. You might have to take a week or two to get him on board with your new routine. Best of luck!
