Hello!

Any ideas for an over abundance of garden produce?

  • I usually share stuff with neighbours, friends and family if my veggies have done well. Depending on what you’re growing you may be able to freeze it to use later.

  • I usually give it away to family and friends as they are always happy to take it – especially those who are vegetarians!

  • Pickle and fermenting is great ! Otherwise being generous to neighbours and friends is lovely too. Alternatively you could sell some produce.

  • Farmers markets trade – or take it into work

  • Some restaurants advertise on Facebook for home produce particularly citrus fruit. A restaurant in my local area is offering 10% of meals if you bring in a bag of citrus, and a local pub offering a free pint in exchange for a bag of lemons or limes.

  • There is always someone in need of home produce – if you can’t use it and or freeze it all for your own future use, share it with neighbours, friends, workmates. We have a system at work where we take in our over supplies and swap for other fruit or veggies – win/win situation for everyone!

  • If you can’t eat it or freeze it or give it to friends or workmates there are often places that feed the homeless that would love it or put it out on the footpath with a sign “free to take” or pay for depending on your council or leave it just inside your yard with the sign. Ask around.

  • We tend to make things to freeze, we made bulk lots of minestrone soup, spaghetti sauce and zucchini slice most recently.

  • What can’t be eaten I take into work as there is always someone that loves homegrown produce. makes their day. And I love it as there’s no waste.

  • I pick any extras and freeze fresh to use another time or i have a lot I make a big pot of veg soup and again freeze in family serve sizes for those nights I can’t be bothered or to pull out when the winter ills occur.

  • I freeze a lot. I make jam, chutney, sauce, relish. I dry some. I give a lot away to neighbours. At the moment, I have too many tomatoes, but not enough to make a chutney or anything, think I’ll semi dry them and store in olive oil

  • What we don’t eat straight away we make into jam if fruit, dry herbs or make pest out of excess basil. Give away to family and friend and even freeze.

  • You can always dry some produce .. have tried figs and apricots. I want to try making sun dried tomatoes where the oil can preserve the dried tomatoe even longer. Blend and puree and freeze seems to work well – depending what you have!

  • I love the barter system Ellen – this is the way I like to live too. Sharing produce and making the best use of our precious resources. Good on you! :)

  • I agree with previous answers and yes, pickle and fermenting is what my grandma used to do.
Also you could sell some by setting a wee stall up in your front yard.
I have chickens and sell over produce to a friend. I used to have a neighbor I gave them to and he gave me free raw honey back.

  • All terrific suggestions for using produce and all achievable – thanks. :)

  • If you have the time you can also pickle some things (piccalilli is an english style side sauce with veggies like beans, cauliflower, onions etc). You can cut up herbs and freeze them in ice cubes – then stre in plastic zip lock bags and use in cooking. Cut tomatoes in halves/quarters and freeze on a flat tray, then once frozen store in a bag or container – it can be used to replace tin tomatoes.
Otherwise as suggested shelters/charity. Some cities have a yellow food van who take leftover food. Good luck!

  • The comment below is wonderful and if I may suggest one more: you could seek out shelters/refuges or churches/programs that provide meals for the homeless, socially disadvantaged and isolated.
    Good luck in your quest.

  • You can give away to friends, family, work mates or freeze what you can should you need them later on.
