Hello!

What do you use to cut your baby’s nails with most safely, especially when they move around a lot? Someone told me you should just bite the nails, but I have to say that doesn’t sound right to me – seems more like an old wife’s tale, lol.

  • In all honesty I get my husband to cut our kids nails ( as I’m terrified of cutting them lol) and he just uses the baby nail clippers but I have heard of something called the nail snail that some people use though!

  • I use clippers or just my fingers

  • Some people do chew them, I always used baby scissors which have a rounded end so they cant get hurt

  • I use baby clippers. I do it when the baby is sleeping or when she just had a feed and is relaxed.

  • Buy the Manicure Baby clippers, I still have mine and gave it to my daughter who is now 19 . Cut your baby nails when asleep so he/she won’t move and store in a place where you can find it . I lost the first one and had to get another one because they are very tiny .

  • Manicare brand has a cute nail clipper specifically designed for babies . I have used it for a many years and I have still have it somewhere. It is tiny though so you may need to put it somewhere so you don’t lose it . Safe and cute .

  • I use the baby nail clipper, but I can only do it after bub have deep sleep (which is not very often). It is still a bit of struggle cutting her toe nails as she don’t like anyone touching her toes.

  • I have baby scissors that have rounded edges, the baby needs to be still and calm ortherwise you could still hurt them. Some people chew the nails but some people also use their mouth to suck the snot out of their babies nose – each to their own! When my baby was small I would cut her nails when she was asleep. Now at 1.5 yrs I just tell her what I’m going to do. Sometimes I only get a couple done at a time

  • I have heard of Mums biting them the first time. You will find your baby’s nails will need cutting after a week or so unless your baby is premature. Toenails tend to not grow quite as quickly. Some hate having their toes touched so cutting those nails can be a bigger battle, especially if baby is a light sleeper. The only way my friend cut her elder child’s nails without a fuss was to wait until she was sound asleep. Then you could do anything with her. For that matter you still can. No kidding, we can sit her up and put her dressing gown on her and she is 8y.o. They could transfer her from her babyseat to stroller without her stirring at all, and viceversa. They even had her first pair of walking shoes fitted while she was asleep in her stroller, then went and had lunch, then got part way home before she woke up. I was with them and couldn’t believe my eyes. The younger one mostly stirs when you move his arms when you do up or release his restraint. Sometimes he wakes up completely, other times he stirs, opens his eyes and closes them again.

  • I use one of those little baby sized nail clippers and either sing to bubs or put on the TV (anything to cause a distraction) whilst cutting. Failing that, just using a nail file to file them down a bit, is also good.

  • I used to bite my daughter’s nails…now she bites her nails all the time. Oops!

She’s old enough for nail cutters now, but for my little son I never cut them – just use a cardboard nail file and file them down.
