My daughter recently had a broken leg (tibea/shin bone). She was in a full leg cast for over 3 months so now has limited mobility and is still limping quite a lot. We can’t really afford to go to the physio 3 times a week so wondering whether other mums have been through this and what exercises will help her?

  • Can you afford to go to the physio once, and ask him/her to give you some at home exercises?

  • When you can’t afford to see a physio 3x a week, you may be able to afford to see a physio once a month or so and receive advise and exercises. I don’t think anyone on here should advice you what exercises should be done unless # we’re a physio ourselves # we have seen your child

  • Id see a physio just for an initial consult and ask for a plan. Start by walking with what she can tolerate.

  • Walking might be a good way to start as you should try and build the muscle in the leg. You could also walk in swimming pool lane and alternate with swimming.

  • I would suggest seeing a physio and asking them what exercises you can do at home.

  • I think you will need to take her to a physio. Explain you can’t afford to come often. They should be able to give your daughter some exercises and then may be a review visit a bit later to see how she is going.

  • just get her walking and standing on the leg as much as possible, maybe even tie a weight to it

  • definitely the physio. i can’t suggest any because i never had to deal or even see such situation but wanted to wish u good luck. hope she is doing well now

  • A good physio will give you a range of exercises that you can follow with instructions that are safe to do, without having to visit every few days. They should be able to say do this for a week, then if everything is ok, do this the next etc. Always follow your doctor and physio’s advice. Ask if swimming, floating ect is ok as well.

  • Try gymnastics, my son has spina bifeda had turned in feet and would always trip as had weak legs and within 12 months he had built up the strength in his legs, lump gone and feet had stopped turning in and we had less trips.

  • Please get her to physio, as often as you can, and get some take-home exercises to do. I have life-long mobility restrictions from multiple fractures and I wouldn’t wish that sort of problem on anyone.
    Lack of physio now could have lifelong consequences. Swimming, stretching, weights etc can be beneficial but it needs to be overseen by a professional. Your local hospital or community health care centre should be able to provide free or cheap physio.

  • I certainly understand not being able to go to the Physio but if you go at least once you can ask them what exercises she should do. I think that would be the best bet and then at least you know you are doing the right thing.

  • I would definitely visit the physio to at least get exercises you can do at home.its really important for her to strengthen it back up again.I dislocated my knee and had physio on it twice a week to strengthen ( for about 3 months).i did pilates in their practice which was really good because after a few private sessions with the physio showing me what to do it only cost $13 to go and do my exercises.look into it!
