Hello!

A lot of books I read which have been written by an American author refer to a biscuit, which accompanies a meal (generally breakfast), and can be eaten with either sweet or savoury (I.e. Gravy) toppings/sides. So what is it? Is there an Australian equivalent?

  • f you’re in the USA, a ‘biscuit’ is what Australians and the English may refer to as a scone. American biscuits are usually enjoyed as part of a savoury meal, served with meat and gravy.

  • American biscuits are similar to the Australian scones usually eaten as a side dish/ accompaniment. Their sweet baked treats are referred to as cookies.


  • is a small bread with a firm browned crust and a soft interior. They are made with baking powder or baking soda as a chemical leavening agent rather than yeast. They are similar to British scones or the bannock from the Shetland Isles.
    The Americans usually have their’s as biscuits & gravy as a side to their meal.
    Scones that we eat are usually eaten with jam,butter ,cream with cups of tea or coffee.
