On trip advisor you can break down to do top 10 family hotels in xxxxxx (the town you are visiting) and top tips for xxxxx (the city) I also look at the hotels and rather than looking at the positive experiences which obviously are going to be good I click on the terrible, poor and average reviews and see are they just winging people like “the hotel did not bring my egg soft boiled” or are they genuine bad things and would upset the holiday like if everyone writes “noisy too near to the train station so woken every hour as train went through etc” Also onto the room tips click on that and you get all the tips from all the travellers which is good and i have found really helpful in the past.
