Someone told me the other day it is quite a bit darker in colour than plain flour. I guess using it in sponge is out of the question.

It’s a grain that’s made into flour. Meant to be much healthier for you but it’s not cheap. You’ll find it at health food stores or some supermarkets in the health Isle.

Obviously you are not a sixties child !!! My Wonderfull mother used all those great ingrediants when I was a child, she made her own bread from scratch kneeding the dow and leaveing it in the sun to rise. Nothing was made of plain ingrediants it was all what is natural and the best for us children. We didnt no then how lucky we where.

Think of it as a sister to wheat, I mainly see it in grain stores or in some special bakeries. It is not gluten free

Question has been answered, but it’s definitely worth giving it a go. I often use a mix of spelt and regular flour (particularly when baking for others) as it can be a bit heavy on its own – try 60% spelt 40% plain. But it’s much more nutritious than regular white or wholemeal flour and easier on the tummy, so makes a good substitute. There are lots of recipes online using spelt. Bulk foods stores usually sell it and should be much cheaper than health food or grocery stores. Good luck!

You are very welcome! I have a friend who buys Spelt bread and it is expensive; however; very filling and lasts a long time. The quality of the bread varies and again you have to research the best options.

It isn’t a cheap flour. If you are going to the trouble of making your own bread etc it pays to use good quality flour.

Plain flour, self rasing flour, corn flour etc. Its a dry ingredient used in cooking

Spelt flour is wheat-free but not gluten-free.
I use it often. It’s more expensive but healthier than the wheat alternative.

Health food stores and fresh food markets sell spelt flour. It still contains gluten; however; it is easier for the body to digest as it is more soluble. Google search Spelt and you will find some interesting information on Spelt and the above stores should also have information/fact sheets for you to read. Have fun researching. 🙂

I’m pretty sure it’s grain free. If it’s in the supermarket it will be in the health food aisle
