Hello!

My little brother is living with us for a little while and recently had food poisoning after eating a mince dish, so now feels sick whenever he eats something similar. I want to cook something the whole family can eat but am used to using a lot of mince. Eg. my meal plan usually includes pasta bolognese turned into shepherd’s pie, burritos and maybe lasagne. Any Other ideas for my 2 week meal plan? It’s my go to dish!
(yes he is happy to eat other things and prepare himself but I’d love to have a menu that can include him).

  • Try substituting chicken mince – I believe it would work in all the dishes you’ve mentioned.

  • Chicken casserole, chicken pasta bakes and risottos (both chicken and vegetable) are some easy ideas.

  • You can replace the mince in a lot of recipes with mushrooms.

  • Curried sausages we are having tonight or stir fry’s are delicious especially the range of sauces you can chose from.

  • There are lots of pasta sauces that don’t require mince. Fried rice and omelette. Chicken stir-fry. Fish and chips.

  • Why don’t you substitute the mince with another meat? A secondary cut like chuck on or off the bone will cook really nicely in sauce. It will break down and you could shred it if you wish. You will find that this will fit in perfectly into your other dishes.

  • There are also vegetarian options to mince that may work and will not have a mince taste.

  • Sausages, beef and chicken will replace mince in those dishes. Maybe try alternatives to the mince.

  • curried snags
    stir fry
    schnitzels
    parmas
    chicken curry

  • Chicken& salad wraps are great summer food

  • Yes casseroles are good and there super tasty!

  • If you cook your mince dishes different to the old that made him sick, would that help. Patties, meatloaf, stir fry etc

  • Chicken schnitzel night is always good and healthy! :)

  • Try Tuna Mornay, quiche and sausages and mash. Other than that I do a lot of slow cooker meals (as I work full time), I always get ideas off the slow cooker central website, give it a go. We just had BBQ Plum Chinese chicken last night for dinner.

  • You didn’t mention who is in your family and how old they are but here are some regular meals from our house – Bangers and Mash; Chops and veg; Tuna Pasta Bake; Frittata; Toasted sandwiches; Stir Fries; Lamb shanks (now it’s getting warmer); Stews/ Casseroles.

  • Sausages – bbqs, pasta with bacon and cream
if you are after the cheaper cuts of meat to go around the whole family – marinated chicken wings, chicken legs or slow cooked meals.

  • Chicken burritos
    Roast chicken and veggies
    Homemade pizza
    Stir-fry

  • casseroles are good and great served over pasta or mashed potato on top or pastry for pie.

  • If he like pasta then try cutting up chicken or lamb chops meat and add into the dish.My kids enjoy their chicken lasagne or lamb and you will not go wrong.

  • Diced meat of the cheaper cuts instead of minced. Great for a slow cooked meal that includes the all in one dish type of stews, casseroles and bakes. Have used my left of stew to make pies etc the following day just needed to thicken the sauce. Think it will be more of a texture issue for you brother so hopefully you can make your normal type of meals just substitute the mince for different bigger cuts of meat and or vegetables.
