Hello!

I have two large pot plants at the front of my house. The pots have their own watering systems in each pot. They contain some non descript greenery, however I would like to add colour. Any ideas what to plant that works in the shade?

  • Clivea and hellabores and cyclamen

  • Pop to Bunnings – if you look at hey way they have their plants on show, you will notice some are in the shade, some are almost in the dark and some are out in the sun – thats the easiest way I found to work out what to put where!

  • We also have peace lillies in a big pot by our front door. It’s very hardy.

  • Yes Definitely your local nursery will provide you with tips for sure!

  • Do yourself a big favour buy two Bird of Paradise plants the same size and plant these.
They flower in winter and last a long time. Cut the dead flower off and another will grow.
I have cheated a bit I bought a plastic Bird of Paradise flower and popped in my planter
for visual effect and I find I now have two the three flowers all the time. Looks exotic!

  • Violets love shade and come in variety of colours, though not sure how they go outside. but worth a try and can be grown from cuttings (a single leaf in fact. Maiden hair fern, also geraniums are hardy anywhere, masses of colour and a;sp grow from cuttings. You can also get rose and lemon scented ones too. Garden centers can help in choice too and you can see before you buy. One of my art works, now grannie can do what I Want to do

  • If you use Mother-in-Law’s tongues you need very strong pots. As they multiply they may split a plastic pot (speaking from experience) You need to keep tipping them out, parting and re-planting. Some geraniums will tolerate shady areas and are drought tolerant. Go for a walk around your area and you may get some ideas.

  • Lillies and ferns like shaded areas. Also some types of begonias which can come in lovely colours.

  • Lilly’s can come in different colours and like the shade.

  • We have potted weeping figs in ours, & we plant annuals underneath for colour.

  • I had a cordyline in a similar spot and it died :( now I have mother in laws tongues and I forget to water them – they keep going. Not sure what colours you are after – mother in law tongues aren’t everyone’s taste – strappy, green and cream. Nurseries have a section for shaded plants – clivea have a nice spray of flowers, azaleas come in a variety of colours and I think go ok in shade, i had a palm and some begonias self sewed underneath and they had a variety of pretty colours

  • lol try it out! or google. your local nursery will provide you with tips.

  • I’ve planted peace lillies in the pots outside my front door. So far so good as I tend to kill everything. I did first Google plants that were hard to kill which is why I bought these :)
