  • I took mine before they had their first tooth, get them used to dentist visits as early as possible. Same with brushing teeth, I started before they had teeth.

  • 6 months after the first tooth comes through is the recommendation

  • I took mine as soon as they gad teeth. I thought it would be less of a drama if I took them from a young age. Now, the only thing that prevents them from having regular dentist visits is the cost! But they have no dentist phobias

  • I left it until my daughter started Prep. She was 5.

  • pop in to your local school dentist and ask. I took mine for the first time when they were 5 and 4. If you think there might be issues then I’d book the 3 year old in now.

  • If you have a school dentist in your local area, give them a ring.

  • They should be introduced to a dentist from the age of 2.

  • it doesn’t hurt to get them checked early, but until they start getting their second teeth through it isn’t really necessary

  • Glad I’m not the only one waiting until they’re at school.

  • i left it till my daughter was in school

  • Good question and a lot of useful tips

  • take them with you when you go so it is familiar when you start taking them. chat to your dentist to see what age they suggest.

  • Introduce the children to the dentist about 2-3 years to help them familiarise them with the sights , and sounds of a dentist surgery and having their teeth examined. Early visits will help elimiate any teeth problems while the milk teeth are growing and possible overcrowding etc as the second teeth arrive.

  • I feel bad too, mine are 2 and 4 and haven’t been yet

  • I would like to know this too

  • I feel bad after reading this. mine haven’t been yet

  • I took my daughter at 2 the dentist was lovely. But it cost my $60 and she did nothing but give my daughter a toothbrush.and looked in her mouth.

  • Once they have a few teeth they really need to start having their oral care checked.. 1-2 years old imo :)

  • When should I start taking my child to the dentist?

Experts agree that you should bring your child to the dentist by her first birthday. If you haven’t taken your child for a dental checkup, make an appointment as soon as possible. Then follow the dentist’s guidelines for follow-up visits based on your child’s needs.

If you can’t afford dental care for your child, consider getting in touch with your local health department to find out about resources.
