I’ve purchased mine directly in store at specsavers, as I use my private health extras and usually not out of pocket. When I first needed glasses I didn’t have private health and used an online website with my prescription and was able to get a good deal for like $50 for frames, lens and delivered. This was like 12 years ago and everything is now more expensive. I think it depends if you want a designer style or basic frames. I also pay more for the lens I use – I have to wear glasses all the time and find the upgraded coatings of the lens make a huge difference vs standard.
Specsavers – You do feel a little like they are herding sheep at the beginning but the optometrists are always lovely (I have been to a few of their stores) and they have great glasses at awesome prices. Most are 2 for 1.
I go to a good eye specialist for the test, then ask for my script. I then shop around to find frames I like at the best price. There is a group called Spectacle Warehouse that are really reasonable atm.
We’re in Rural QLD and have an optometrist that travels here once per month. When my daughter needed glasses, I decided not to go through them because although the testing was more convenient, it meant the glasses would be posted to us and not fitted professionally, and if they broke, we didn’t have anyone we could duck into town to help. We’ve travelled to our nearest town and used OPSM and are extremely happy. They had affordable packages and a range of frames for her to choose, which we would have missed out on otherwise. We can also go to any OPSM store for service, and her record can be faxed through to compare results from her previous visits. There’s probably more choices in the bigger cities, but I can’t fault OPSM for service or price, or quality of their frames and lenses.
I have been wearing glasses since high school and have always gone to a local optometrist . These days there are franchises such as OPSM and Specsavers which are not bad and most important is that you are happy with the professional and friendly services of the optometrist .
I used to only buy from my optomerist, but they were much too expensive the last time. I have recently bought a pair of glasses and sunglasses from specsavers and there was no gap apart from antiglare, so both pairs cost me $35 and they are both really nice.
