Hello!

I’ve been a stay at home mum for nearly 8 years.
Next year my twins will be in Kindy and I’m starting to think about what I want to do job wise.
I fell pregnant just after I graduated year 12 from high school and have been at home ever since.
I have no idea what I would like to do, no dreams or hobbies so I’m stuck trying to decide.
I would like to have a few qualifications to be able to choose from
I never thought about what I wanted to do when I left school due to being pregnant.

  • Talk to friend and family, ask about their jobs. Head on not your local jobseekers office for job ideas too. Maybe start small, for example do a course to upgrade your English or maths, or a course about job applications

  • It’s been a few years since this post, so I hope you’ve been able to find work that you enjoy.

  • Maybe do some short courses at TAFE and see what you enjoy, i work in aged care and love it. I did the cert 3 in aged care but i started work before i had the certificate and studied while i worked part time :)

  • I was like you, no idea what I wanted to do when I left school either….and I wasn’t pregnant. You need to really think about what you enjoy doing to start with

  • What do you LOVE doing?
There are quizzes online about career suitability.

  • I would suggest at this point in time you’ll need flexibility rather than chasing your dream job (my dream job is to not HAVE to work but work because I want to), the majority of people are not happy in their jobs! My daughter started daycare this year and I went back to work and have had about a month off between the 2 of us being sick (hence I suggest flexibility). Think about the options in your area and things that fit into school hours or around them. A friend of mine does nightfill at woolies and loves it. Admin and reception jobs in a small place could work, as women we tend to go for the caring and people oriented fields like welfare, child care, hairdressing etc. You can always ask to do some volunteer work and if it interests you look at the courses you need. Op shops often look for people to help in their stores and then you can use this as retail experience

  • im a nurse and I love it. very flexible hours and never boring very rewarding

  • Personally I would pick a course you find interesting as its very difficult to find work when you have been unemployed for a period (trust me I have been out of work for 5yrs and even though I had a management job prior to having kids I have been trying for almost 12mnth with no success). I have tried thinking of what I “want” to do but I too am lost, so I have decided to concentrate on studying something that interests me first rather than the job at the end of the study. Hopefully something sticks out at me when I am finished my course. I might add though I am studying something that could lead me in many directions (psychology) So i will hopefully have some choices when I am completed. Goodluck.

  • I could be wrong but I though there was an online skills tester type tool that may help you decide in which direction you want to head. Also what about seeing a careers counsellor. I know centrelink have them and I’m sure there are other non government agencies that would as well.

  • Hi i have been a stay at home mum her nearly 9 years my twins start school next year ,so I am going to do my certificate in child services and get some cleaning with a cleaning agency so I can hopefully work the school hours, good luck in deciding ,if I was insure as to what to do I would just try to get a job and see if by just being in the workforce could help you decide what to do

  • I have this issue right now all I did was jump on the net and looked around at what was available around my town all I found was a coles outlet it wasnt my dream but after the interview I already felt confidence building for when I find what I want.

  • How about doing a few short adult education courses – the eight week ones that are an hour or two a week are often fairly inexpensive – to give you a taste of a few things? That might help you find a direction.

  • looking threw job ads might help you decide what job you might want to do

  • Maybe just look through job websites and see what jumps out at you, thats what i would do.

  • This is a hard one I think I’ll be the same when all my kids go to school..

  • I just signed up for an online uni course, but I had huge trouble deciding what to do.
Best suggestion? Write down what you are interested in doing, put them in a hat and draw one out. Start studying, and if you find you hate it, you can switch to another course. Starting is the hardest part. Good Luck!

  • Have you thought of doing a childcare certificate? You have experiences with kids and it seems like a natural progression.

  • If you’re not sure what you want to do, contact TAFE to get a copy of their course guides sent to you. If you want to ease into studying, check out an organization like the WEA that we have here in South Australia. You should have something similar where you live.

  • tafe have quick courses that might help with your decision

  • try a few different things, do a few cheap classes nd it will come to you
