Hello!

Hi all, so I returned to work part-time in a new role but at the same company working three days and I’m finding that those three days are frantic and I’m so stressed my hands shake, any advice?

  • Start by looking at your workload. If it feels overwhelming, it might be worth having a chat with your manager to see if priorities can be adjusted or spread more evenly. Sometimes they don’t realize how much is being squeezed into your hours.

At home, prep can be a lifesaver. Try to simplify your routines—maybe pack lunches, plan outfits, or organize your work bag the night before. Little things like this can take some of the edge off your mornings.

  • I found the same thing when I returned to work in between bub 2 and 3. I also felt really unsupported at home and my husband left everything to me. I got very unwell and my kids were constantly sick being in childcare for a couple of days a week. I think we ended up spending more time at home sick rather then me working because they got everything that went around. I’m feeling really stressed and anxious about the idea of returning to work. I don’t know where I can find a flexible job with 3 kids and how I’m going to manage my stress levels and everything left up to me. I’m sorry I can’t offer any advice, but just know that you’re not alone

  • I was in the exact same boat when I had baby number 1. Returned to work but in a new team and it was covid so I didn’t know anyone or have any contacts etc.
It’s always super stressful especially trying to balance mum life but you manage to make it work.

  • Ypu are starting a new role so a bit of anxiety is normal. I’d see a GP if it doesnt go away after 2 weeks.
Allow yourself some time after work to de-stress. Sit in the car alone for 10 minutes , write a musical, whatever makes you happy.

  • Initially it will be hard, but after a time you will settle down. The important thing is to set boundaries, and make sure that you don’t have a full time work load. I know a lot of mothers who work part time but are basically doing a full time job so have to work late and night and still only get paid for being part time. I straight up told my boss that I will not be checking emails on my days off or when I leave work, and he was fine with it.

  • Try not to be too hard on yourself. It’s such a juggling act and the first few months are definitely the hardest trying to get into the swing of things. Try and pre pack lunches/bags etc the night before and if it gets a bit much sometimes it’s OK to take a personal day to regroup ????

  • I returned to work 3 days a week after my eldest was born. I found it way more stressful than working full time. Trying to catch up on company emails, company changes and work load was crazy. I also felt i wasnt as valued as I was when full time. Good luck, hopefully it qill get easier.

  • If you feel stressed maybe try having natural stress remedies and taking five to meditate if you can or a moment if mindfulness

  • Thanks for giving me your advice.

  • if you had a good relationship with your boss I’d discuss if there is a way to distribute your work load. or you could way up your options and see whether you stay in the job or seek an alternative.

  • Consider speaking with your manager and expressing your concerns, is it the work load, the actual job or the balance stressing you out? Part time work is tough and will take time to settle (from both you and work place). Good luck

  • I find a lot of part time people seem to get more work than the hours they do. Easy to say but try not to worry about it you can only do what you can only do and they might adjust your workload if you are being expected to fit 4 or 5 days work into 3.
