Hello!

My son was 2 in August and I’m worried he’s not as advanced as what he should be, we were at the park the other day and this little girl who is the same age as him can speak fluent english and spanish, where as my son only knows basic words and doesn’t form sentences yet. I’m a stay at home mum and try to educate him the best I can but he either gets distracted or frustrated because he can’t repeat what I say.. can anyone give me any tips on how to help my baby learn? Thanks in advance!

  • A lot of my friends had girls when I had my boys and it was interesting to see the differences between them. My boys were easily distracted and were happier running, climbing and exploring than reading, talking etc. They did catch up over the years – I think they just learn differently.

  • I wouldn’t worry, but if you are concerned maybe you should see your GP.

  • Oh goodness gracious me don’t you know you should never compare your children (or yourself for that matter) to others. It will only end in you or others being made miserable

  • To me every kid learns at a different speed my two year old is just starting to put sentences together but still struggles a bit, I noticed she was a lot behind other kids the same age at about 1 1/2 so I started reading more to her during the day (like picture books on animals etc) and also talking to her about her day and trying to get her to repeat some word back to me.

  • How did you go? The blue book is a handy reference tool for where they could be developmentally

  • I am sure he can do other things that the little girl can’t do. Everyone learns differently but if you are concerned try to speak to your health nurse or doctor.

  • we all learn things at different ages,my mother say,s I never walked until sixteen months,i also have my youngest son(second youngest)with learning difficulties, but he did catch up with children his age and survived it,today,he is strong and studying.plz don’t use too much baby talk, they need to be spoken to properly in order to learn, lots of fun,to be had.

  • I think all children are different. But if you are still have concerns go to your GP.

  • Well firstly, don’t stress. Every kid is different, and at two they can vary really widely in what they can do. Perhaps joining a local playgroup would give you more perspective, plus a bit of fun and some ideas to teach your son?

  • You should address any concerns you have with your GP initially who can refer you on to a child health specialist if they think its necessary. Try not to stress too much, I’m sure your doing a great job, every child is different and boys do develop slower in some areas than girls.

  • all children are different the same as all adults are different dont stress

  • I wouldn’t be to worried. In fact they say kids that speak later are actually smarter!

  • Put him in to day care and he will get all the help needed from other children.

  • he is fine. boys are so different to girls. i wouldn’t worry what other kids can do.

  • there are some good comments here

  • kids learn at differnt stages

  • I’m in the same boat as you, My daughter is 20 months old, and she still can’t word a sentence together, have been trying to teach her, I read to her almost everyday, I talk to her and try teaching her words, but she doesn’t seem to be learning anything.

  • I also agree that girls tend to speak faster than boys. My nephew is 2 and doesn’t talk in full sentences yet butcher my neice was 2 she was having almost full conversations. My mum told me that my sister and I talked better at that age and my brothers were also later in talking in sentences.

  • In my experience girls are more verbal at an earlier age. Also kids learn at a different rate. So just keep trying, sing songs to him, read him stories and he will learn at his own rate.

  • First things first – ALL children develop at different paces and should NEVER be ‘compared’. Quite frankly, this other child is obviously VERY advanced and may well also be very gifted.
To me, it sounds like your son is roughly an ‘average’ child – and I do not mean this in any bad sort of way, just that if placed on a graph, he would likely sit around the middle where the majority of children his age would be.
If you are still concerned, have him seen by an expert, but at this stage I feel you have very little to be concerned about.
