Hello!

What is a good age to introduce toddler safe crayons and where can I buy them from?

  • As soon as you’re reasonably confident they won’t eat them…. shops like Target stock them.

  • Target, big w, kmart and any art supply store sell non toxic crayons :)

  • As soon as they can hold them and show an interest in doing more than just chewing on them. It will be different for every child, but around 18 months, give or take a few months, is a safe bet. Crayola has a range that are sold at bigw, kmart, target, myer and some art shops

  • I think as early as they can hold them (with constant supervision tho). Little ones love doodling and the age at which they start varies. Crayola have safe non toxic crayons I believe and make in larger sizes for smaller hands

  • I do it around 18 months with supervision

  • You need to make sure your toddler doesn’t push them down too hard or they will break; even the Crayola ones. There is a lot more risk of a child attempting to put a piece in his/her mouth then. I had to confiscate the crayons. Be aware that marker may go through the paper onto the surface below.

  • I don’t think there is an age. My little one loved doodling before he was 1.. I just made sure I watched him.

  • depends on you! i would give them a play with crayons. you can buy triangle shaped crayons that children can hold onto way better. Babies shouldn’t eat crayons but they will be fine if they do (That’s what my baby nurse said) Give them non-toxic washable markers and then they have less area that they could attempt to eat

  • I believe it is crayola who have non toxic safe crayons…I have no concerns with giving 2 yr olds these as I trust them and I am usually watching whilst colouring so can stop any eating that goes on hahah

  • I gave my kids non-toxic crayons from as early as they could hold them (maybe 8-10 months, I can’t remember!)
I agree with the other mums, Crayola seem to have the best ones. We used the big bulb shaped ones to begin with, as they are easy to grip, then moved on to big chucky crayons when I thought they were ready.

  • I bought some from big w – non toxic washable from crayola brand. I bought them for my daughter when she was around 16/17mths

  • We have had these since 10 mths of age. Now she has textas , pencils, paint etc. you will find most good branded crayons are non toxic.

  • Thanks mums. Will definately checkout the crayola range

  • I think as young as feel feel confortable to let them use crayons, there are ones that you can buy by crayola that have a grip thats good for younger kids they are super chunky and have a hard plastic cover grip on them so its really hard for them to be broken. They are called my first Crayola egg shaped crayons..I find other ones are to easily damaged.

  • Micador brand crayons are fantastic and non-toxic. Check out their range for little hands. With supervision, my children all started ‘scribbling’ before they were 1.
