Hello!

I just learnt a very costly lesson and had to pay late fees on my credit card bill. Ouch! I’ve now signed up to paying my bills automatically. That means no more late fees and I have also arranged to pay my gas and electricity bills by direct debit to take advantage of discounts offered for paying bills on time.

  • At least you now know and it won’t happen again!

  • Late fees are annoying. Be careful when you do direct debit too. I had a friend who had direct debits on some bills and when she changed bank accounts, there was a bit of trouble with some of the billers.

  • I direct debit fortnightly (on pay day) with my gas and electricity bill which saves any nasty surprises especially since they arrive every 8 weeks, not quarterly anymore

  • The advice of definitely don’t withdraw cash! The rates are huge! is great! Thanks!

  • Definitely a lesson I’ve learned the hard way too :p

  • I learnt this the hard way when I first moved out of home, hits home pretty quickly, payment arrangements are always a good idea before the due date if you know you cannot pay.

  • Credit card late fees are massive! Just a hint though, if you threaten to cut the card, they can generally magically waive the fee.. Provided you don’t do it every month!

  • Here is another tip. NEVER ever withdraw money with your credit card. You will be stung heaps! Debit cards with a credit facility are ok though!

    • Definitely don’t withdraw cash! The rates are huge!

  • Eep I’m sure that would not have been a pleasant experience, at least it was a once off and you’ve made sure that you won’t be encountering that money grabber again.

  • I certainly prefer a paper bill than online emailed accounts as I have twice overlooked their due date & received overdue charges.

  • The direct debit is surely a good thing. Just go on checking regularly all the charges.

  • I didn’t know you could get automatic payments on credit card, great idea. We get electricity automatically paid too. If we pay too much it we get credit and have an easier month!

  • yep that sucks but sometimes that happens. at least you have it sorted

  • Yes, most people only make that mistake once on their credit card bill.

  • Late fees are dreadful! I used to work in a bank and if it was a one off, we used to refund the fee as customer retention. Worth thinking about going and seeing if you can get it back just this once

    • That happened to me once and it got refunded!

  • Often you can argue these fees with banks; especially if it is a first time late fee.

  • I don’t have a credit card at all but have always hated paying late fees and have therefore set up transfers too. Great idea and one less thing to worry about (providing you don’t change your bank details)

  • Ouch indeed. Good on you for sorting it out quick smart do it doesn’t happen again
