Hi, just putting my story on here to see what other MoMs might suggest to help. I currently work in a combination cafe/restaurant. The cafe bit is fine as we have supervisors that are fair and keep an eye on us all. However I am struggling with the restaurant side of things. Being night time shifts, there are no supervisors, the chef is in charge. Unfortunately, I have put him off side by going to the daytime supervisors with my problems. Now I find I am being victimised. For example, I turned up one night and the chef watched me set up the whole restaurant. When I had finished, he informed me a school group was in and I had to pack up half of the restaurant for them :/ He also does things like cook meals for other staff and does nothing for me. If I ask, I have to pay as I’m ‘ordering it, so you have to pay!’ Then giving me what I didn’t order :/ I also used to make coffee for everyone at the start of my shifts, now the chefs coffee just sits there. I applied for a permanent position and didn’t get it because of feedback from the chef. The chefs girlfriend also works in the restaurant. She doesn’t like me because I reported her for inappropriate behaviour at work. So they ‘gang up’. I am always given the worst jobs to do, ones everyone hates. I often find myself the only one working while the others are eating or chatting. So far, I’ve been coping with it, but the longer it goes on the more down I’m getting. It’s really depressing. I can’t go to the day supervisors as that’s what caused all this in the first place. It’s really disheartening to see the one person who should be mature and work motivated (the chef) the one I should be able to go to when needed, mbehaving so childishly and immaturely and making my work life hell. I’m really stuck as to how to deal with it, except quit, which I simply cannot afford to do. Any suggestions???

  • This is a terrible situation. It’s not only unfair it sounds like work place bullying and harassment and in your situation I would report it. You did the right thing by going to superiors who unfortunately made it worse so I would also think about dies King to someone right on top. I would also keep eye out on any other job opportunities but not before reporting these people because If their doing it to you they will continue with this behaviour with someone else. Good luck and hope it works out for you. All the best!

  • This is not a good environment for you to work in. I would say keep your eye out for another job and just keep working where you are for the moment. Just do your work and leave everyday until you can get a new job. I really hope a new opportunity come your way soon.

  • Not sure if you’re casual or part-time etc but I’d keep a diary or log of the incidents. You may need to report to your union

  • Because the chefs girlfriend is the person I’m having issues with. I didn’t feel comfortable reporting her to him and I didn’t think he would handle it appropriately, turns out I was right. And being new, I wasn’t 100% sure of the process

  • Oh dear, they are already showing they don’t like you and it does jepoardise your job because you will eventually hate it and leave, The problem is you need to ask yourself this question . Why are you not trusting the chef in the very first place . A job is not just about money . It is important to work as a team and sadly they are already showing their opinion with you . If you don’t like the boss/team , sometimes it is best to leave because your values/opinion just don’t match with theirs. Its a sad reality because it happens a lot and frankly I wouldn’t work in an area if I don’t like the people anyway . Maybe sit down with someone you trust and have a chat and go from there . Hope it works out soon.
