Hello!

I was reading through the blog and it reminded me of my Sewing Machine and electric frying pan, I am not a frequent sewer, more a mender and hemmer, but it is handy to have a sewing machine for those little jobs and to take up hems, I have a machine that is a Dependable brand and my Father bought it for my Mother when they got engaged in 1965, I have had it since about 1986 and it is fantastic and I use it probably at least once a month, I would hate to think how much it has saved me with hemming alone, Hubby laughs at it when I drag it out, and it is heavy, he has offered to buy me a new one but I don’t see the point when this one works so well and I know it and understand it. My other old appliance I inherited is a sunbeam electric frypan that mum and dad got in 1966 for a wedding present, I got it when I separated from my 1st husband in 1990 and I still have it and still use it, it is aluminium looking, the thermostat is great and it cooks a mean roast and potatoes, I have invested in another non stick one but I still frequently bring out the old one when I want to cook larger quantities, Do other MOM’s have old appliances that they have inherited and used or am I just a hoarder!!!

  • My mother has a very old sewing machine with foot pedals and you use it by pressing on the pedals and there is a small wheel on the side to wind up the thread. This is an antique and she bought it when she came to Australia probably over 60 years ago . It is a precious item and she used it a lot to sew and mend clothes when we was growing up .

  • Think that a great….I stiles many items in the kitchen that were passed down from my grandmother. Her rolling pin in particular has special meaning to me. One of my favourite and most useful appliances is my pressure cooker…..it is over 30 years old and whilst it has had a new seal, it is still the most useful item in my kitchen. I just love it! They never make things now…the way they used to. They were made to last back then and we are proof of that!

  • I have had a Frigidaire 2 door fridge that is 46 years old and still going strong. We passed it on to a club we belong to recently and they were pleased to receive it! We upgraded because fridges built that long ago use up a bit more power! I also have a singer sewing machine that my mum had when I was a little girl .I am now 67! My daughter has it at her house but I don’t think she has used it much.

  • Me, not really… I think the oldest appliance I have is a pan to make poffertjes (mini Dutch pancakes). I bought it in The Netherlands in 1996 and I still use it regularly. I wouldn’t know what to do if it ever breaks down. :-)

  • Our toaster was just thrown out recently after 17 years! Who would have thought!

    • very good effort, I bet the next one won’t last as long, they don’t make things like they used to.

  • It’s not an electrical appliance but it’s a roasting dish from my great grandmother that I still use.

    • Great item, my grandmother was always a great one for pressure cookers and I always regret not getting one of hers when I had the opportunity, she also used lots of enamel tin dishes to cook in and she had a wood oven in her kitchen as well as the normal oven, but she used to cook awesome meals in that wood oven which I believe is still in use in the house as the new people renovated the kitchen but retained the wood oven!!

  • I have two sewing machines; a very old singer with a foot pedal! and another one that is forty years old. Both still work and both very much cherished and loved!

    • I am pleased that I am not the only one with an antique sewing machine, I love mine, and I think Mum is proud that I still use it, whenever she knows I have used it she comments how Dad bought it for her when they got engaged and that it was very expensive in the 60’s, My husband has offered to buy me a new one several times but I love this one and it does everything I want to do with it, so whilst it works it will always have a home, although it would be nice if it was a bit lighter because it is very heavy. LOL

      • Mine are also super heavy too. However; like you; I will never ever part with them! :)

  • I have a kenwood mixers that has gone down 4 family’s the first it was a wedding gift at the end of the watt

    • Wow, I forgot about the Sunbeam mixer, I don’t actually have one, but mum still has the one grandma had, I imagine she would have got it in the 1950’s, funny thing is sunbeam have actually released a range that look just like it, Retro they call them, wonder if they will last as long as the original ones.
