Hello!

I am dreading postpartum hair loss, my hair is naturally thin and I definitely noticed it has gotten thicker during my pregnancy. I know this will soon come to an end, and call me vain but I don’t think I can rock the bald look or major hair loss look. So, I have been desperately researching ways to slow down or reduce the amount of hair loss I will experience in the upcoming months. So far, I have been looking at taking a holistic approach to my hair, I have been thinking about seeing the doctor after the baby is born to check on my vitamin and mineral levels. I have had weak nails for a long time and indeed weak hair, so I’m sure my diet could use a boost regardless.

I have done some research and I know I will invest in good fish oil and silica supplements to boost my health and hair. I have also promised myself that I will try to eat healthier. My quest for healthier post pregnancy hair has led me to believe I need to change my diet. More protein, iron rich foods and less sugar. Nutrient dense vegetables and fruit not chocolate and coffee. This is a hard switch, but I now have one coffee a week now and very rarely have a treat. I have noticed changes in my skin as a result, it has been looking healthier. So far I can’t see any changes in my nails or hair but I imagine any changes to either would be much slower.

I believe genetics plays an integral role in the thickness of our hair but I also feel good nutrition can boost the health of hair and can increase volume, even if it is just by a little. While I am not sure how much boosting my diet will stave off hair loss, I can only try and even if the benefits just lead to overall better health that isn’t such a bad thing. Hopefully, I don’t need to wear beanies for 6 months post hair loss but I will try and look at the positives, a healthy me and a healthy baby. What if anything did you notice helped stave off or regrow your hair postpartum?

  • I would suggest a visit to the GP to discuss your issue with hair loss; they may be able to assist? I have a few friends that have suffered with hair loss and have invested in hair styles that suit thinning hair.

  • It doesn’t happen to everyone – I didn’t suffer any hair loss. Don’t panic.

  • Hi! I was loosing some hair too after giving birth. I started taking a multivitamin (maybe it was Centrum) and it took care of it. Success. I think it’s a great idea to supplement fish oil!

  • I have long hair. I lost a lot of hair after the birth of my daughter, but nothing that created bald patches or anything anyone could notice. No one from mums group had any bald patches either. But being healthy is a great move.
