A great craft activity for a rainy day

Material

  • 1 toilet roll
  • 1 sheet A4 paper
  • 1 piece A4 card
  • 2 googley eyes
  • 1 pipe cleaner
  • 1 squeeze bottle of glue
  • 1 handful decorations - glitter, feathers, paper squares etc

Method

  1. Cut wing shapes out of card and paper. Stick the paper onto the card. If your card is white or coloured you will not need the paper on the wings.
  2. Cut a rectangle out of the paper to cover the outside of the toilet roll and stick paper on toilet roll.
  3. Time to decorate your toilet roll and wings. Glue on decorations and googley eyes.
  4. Stick the toilet roll onto the wings in the centre to create your butterfly. Finishing touch is gluing the pipe cleaner which you bend in half into the top of the toilet roll with the two ends pointing out.
  5. Leave to dry overnight.

  • Very clever. When my son was younger and we used to watch Hi-5 I was always creating (with his help) things out of toilet paper rolls to play with. We would make kaleidoscopes, streamers to dance with when watching the show. It was great fun. We would also make them for the other kids when they came over. Simple craft with so many uses.

  • What a great way to encourage creativity and imagination in kids, without resorting to computers and technology. It doesn’t have to cost a lot to keep kids amused, it just takes a bit of thought.
