There’s no need to hang up the bathers and towel over winter, so to encourage kids to ‘just keep swimming’, we’ve joined with JUMP! Swim Schools to give away six swimming packs!
Each pack is valued at $95 and includes:
- 1 x kids swimming cap
- 1 x pair of kids goggle
- 1 x carry bag
- 2 x free swimming lessons at your closest JUMP! Swim School location – JUMP! has more than 55 boutique swim schools across Australia. Our indoor pools are heated to a cosy 32-33 degrees, ensuring that even the youngest swimmers feel comfortable and relaxed. For more information and to find your closest location head to JUMP! The benefits of swimming through winter
As the temperature drops it can be tempting to hang up the goggles and wait until the warmer weather returns. However, continuing with a swimming lesson routine has numerous benefits for kids.
It’s a common misconception that water accidents only occur in summer at beaches and pools, but 40% of drownings happen in winter and spring at locations including lakes, wetlands, dams and baths.
Continuing swimming lessons through winter in a heated pool is one way to ensure your child maintains their swim skills and keeps water safety front of mind.
It only takes two weeks of missed lessons for a child to start going backwards in their swimming, leaving them more vulnerable to water accidents and heading into summer with a less-than-ideal competency level.
If you’re looking for more reasons to keep heading to the pool then consider this – research indicates that children who engage in swimming year-round tend to have stronger immune systems and are less susceptible to illness compared to those who avoid exposure to the elements.
Tips for swimming through winter
If you’re keen to keep on swimming through winter, here are some great tips from fellow parents and carers from the JUMP! Swim School network:
1. Choose a heated indoor pool
2. A hot chocolate in a thermos for after the lesson
3. A warm bubble bath on return
4. Dressing gowns over bathers to keep warm
5. Pop a hot water bottle/heat pack in the swimming bag to warm the clothes and towel for afterwards
6. Use loose clothes and footwear for a quick change over to avoid the struggle with sticky clothes.
And remember, if you’re heading away during the winter school holidays, don’t forget the water dangers that can still be present in the areas you’re visiting or around your accommodation, including water troughs, fountains, dams and ponds. It’s always a good idea to do a quick scout around and remind children to be wary by having conversations about not playing in or near water without an adult.
