Hello!

2 year old walking on tip toes – My son is 2 and since he has been able to walk he walks on his tip toes and sometimes curls his toes under and the walks on his toes like this.
When he does walk normally, his feet are fine. I am not too worried about this as both my younger sisters (now in their 20’s) walked like this (and still do sometimes) and their feet are fine. However, my hubby is worried and thinks that maybe we should look at seeing a podiatrist. Have any other parents experienced this with their children?

  • Its normal at a young age but some kids continue to do it when they get older and that’s when it can cause problems. Ie shortening of muscles etc. I think our sons physio said if they’re still doing it by the time they go to kindy its time to see a physio/podiatrist.

  • Definitely have it checked, in specific the achilles tendon.

  • Definitely look at seeing a podiatrist because it can effect a childs leg muscles

  • I would have him checked and it everything is ok then you won’t have to worry. Perhaps get him to wear shoes more, as these will keep him from curling his toes.

  • Some boys do this, I guess you could have a chat with a physio if you have any concerns,

  • there are some good comments here

  • see a professional if it really owrries u

  • My 4yo is under health clinic support and part of his problem is he walks on toes, same as I do. They have worked with him as this can negatively impact muscles in legs and he has exercises to help break the habit. Walking backwards, practicing heel to toe walking, skipping, hoping ect. Check with your school nurse and they can refer you to Childrens Health centre, where they do speech therapy, ect or clinic sister can refer you. My son has improved heaps with gross motor skills since working with them. Also get referal early as took 12 months to gwt appointment.

  • did you end up seeing a doctor?

  • Did you end up taking him to be checked out?

  • Mine often walks on her tip toes but runs flat foot (you can hear her coming)!

  • Did you end up taking him to be seen by a podiatrist?

  • how did it end up?

  • I think most grow out of it but if your worried speak to the health nurse or doctor

  • What did you end up doing?

  • My nephew does – it is strange – I’ve told my sister in law to get him into dancing. She thinks he will grow out of it.

  • One of my daughter’s did but she grew out if it

  • Both my kids went through a tippy toe phase. If you are concerned it won’t hurt to see the go for advice.

  • I would see your doctor about this, it could cause further foot problems

  • I have never experienced it myself, but would look into it just to be satisfied that their feet are growing properly
