Hello!

“My 15yo son needs to have 2 of his wisdom teeth taken out and the dentist has given him the choice of the chair or to have a general – any tips from mums who have been there done that? Is one better for recovery than the other?” Do you have any advice for wisdom teeth removal?

  • Depends if they are impacted or not. I had two removed (separate times) the first was in the chair and no probs whatsoever as it was not impacted. Very quick recovery. I was beginning to think what’s all the fuss abt having wisdom teeth removed. The second time it was impacted (horizontal). I had it done in the chair as my previous experience was. OMG!!! never again. 4 needles, still felt it. It was so hard to remove he slipped and cut my throat/cheek. I was in pain for a month. I have one more to go which is impacted and I will general that for sure. No way I’m going through that again. I lost kgs and was on every pain killer u could think of for a month, Panadeine Forte, Mersyndol Forte, Tramadol. Xmas lunch for me was fluids while e1 got to pig out :(((( My advice if it’s not impacted then chair for sure. If it’s impacted General without hesitation.

  • At 20 I had mine out in the chair and then caught a train home. Would recommend the train but chair for extraction was fine.

  • My daughter had hers out under general. She had no swelling and recovered really well. Worst part was me setting the alarm during the night to get up and give her pain killers 4 hourly :). You don’t hear anything under a general and I believe that helps your healing…crazy maybe but what I don’t know doesn’t hurt me :). Good luck!!!

  • definitely a general, i know

  • either way, arnica cream or antiflam cream rubbed on the jaw frequently is amazing.

  • my son had all 4 pulled in the chair & my daughter all four under general. Both recovered quickly but my son was in less pain & eating much faster, he also had much less swelling

  • General I remember needing mine done as a kid and the general for me was the way to I was very tense and uncomfy about the pain, with you kid being 15 ask him, he may be braver than I was and have them taken care of in the chair.

  • I had one out in the chair & then the rest out under a general (when I was 19). Mine were very difficult but having one out in the chair was horrible & I recovered much quicker from having the others out under a general.

  • I had my 4 done under general almost 5 years ago. Was great, no memory after the first needle in the hand until I woke in recovery. My surgeon was great, I had no external bruising and recovery was non eventful. I was had braces on at the time, and they were worse than the recovery of the surgery for me.

  • I had mine out in the chair years ago and not a nice experience at all. If it were my son I’d be suggesting a general.

  • i had to have them cut out in the chair as i couldn’t afford to have a general i would def say general if you can

  • I had three removed in the chair…two at same time as on same side…and last one under general…from memory as was a teenager at time…recovery was easier in the chair…had FAR MORE SWELLING AND BRUISING under a general…plus the added stress on the body of having a general if not really necessary seems extreme to myself.

  • I would say general. I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth out at once and am glad that I wasn’t awake! 2 of my teeth hasn’t cut through so they had to put stitches in where they cut the gums. If they haven’t come through much easier to go for a general.

  • I agree with so many other posts. In the chair if tags teeth have cut but general if they are still in the gums.

  • I’m told the chair is better – I’m told the dentists are much more careful in the surgery and more rough when they have you under general, also better recovery as per Julia’s comment above!

  • I had a general for mine, too scarred to have it done in the chair. My sis had hers done in the chair & had no problems at all..

  • I had one in the chair as it was already through and it was awful, not scarred for life by the trauma but it was very rough, had the other three under GA a few years later and the GA was scary but recovered well. the recovery would more relate to the surgery, pulling them out is preferable to surgery in my opinion but not always an option if they are not through yet

  • Have a general. I had mine removed under a general and I still had bruising used lots of ice packs and pain relief. Everyone is different when it comes to recovering and healing and pain threshold.

  • Just the chair. If he had 4 I would say general

  • I had all 4 of mine (plus a couple others from overcrowding) taken out under general when I was 16.
I would suggest he get it done this way. It would be much less traumatic for him and he won’t remember the actual operation.

Recovery wise, would probably be the same I’m guessing. I would ask your dentist.
