Hello!

I am currently breastfeeding my 9 month old daughter but am returning to uni and part time volunteering next year, I have tried time and again to express but nothing comes out so I’m kind of out of the option of expressing for her and need to wean her, how do I do this without getting mastitis or getting to upset and feeling guilty? It’s been about 4 years since I weaned my son and I forget the best way to go about it for both of us. TIA

  • Decrease slowly! Don’t rush it. Even if you continue feeding before and after work and then down to one a day will minimise chance of getting mastitis.

  • How did you go? bub would be well and truly weaned by now if you went ahead with it, hope all went well!

  • the thing with weaning is you have to go slow otherwise you will stress out the bub

  • there are some good comments here

  • 9 months it a good time, i wouldnt feel to bad you have done great

  • You already breastfed her for 9 months and that’s already so awesome! Nothing to feel guilty about!

  • How are you managing with the weening?

  • i hope it goes well :)

  • Some good answers there – all the best with Uni.

  • DO NOT FEEL GUILTY about giving up breastfeeding, yes we all know that breast is best, but formula will not hurt them and they won’t have any social issues taking them off the boob. You have done it for 9 months so they will of had all the goodness, relax and put them on formula. As for mastitis talk to your doctor if you are worried.

  • Don’t feel guilty about weaning, well done on bf up until 9months. My sons loved their food so much that by that age they were practically on a full adult diet and were happy to start weaning. One feed at a time starting with day feeds or the feeds your daughter will be having a bottle for. Most people recommend leaving bed time feeds until last as they are the most comforting for the baby. Enjoy they next chapter in your babies developement.

  • I just weaned my 14 month old daughter who was refusing to give it up n have anything else so I had to deal with a lot of crying nights in under 2 weeks but if u can cut one day feed at a time then gradually change night n morning feeds stay strong n don’t let them push u around u r in charge

  • I started giving my son a bottle of a night just to top him up, then gradually starting giving him one of a morning when he woke up then eventually through the rest of the day.

  • Like the lady above said cut down one feed at a time. I have just weened my 8 month old to return to work in January but am still bfing once a day (usually bed time feed) and am thinking that I might continue one feed a day after returning to work. This might be an option if you still feel you would like to breastfeed when possible.

  • Gradually cut down 1 feed at a time will be less painful for you and gives baby time to get used to a bottle. I gave my son a bottle during the day and still fed morning and night to start with.

  • Both my kids self-weaned so I’m not much help but I’d start now and slowly reduce the number of feeds she has each day substituting them for formula. If you haven’t done so already you’ll have to see whether she takes a bottle. If not, try a sippy cup.

  • I followed the steps in Baby Love for my 3 boys, youngest fully weaned 1 month ago. None of my boys would take bottles, so expressing was useless. I started with offering food after breastfeeds. Then food first and breastfeed after. After that, I stopped breastfeeds overnight, if they woke I would settle them without a feed (this can be hard). Then, when I I was down to 3-4 feeds a day, I would replace one with water from a sippy cup. Usually, the last feed to go is the bedtime one. I’ve swapped that one for warm cows milk with my older boys, but my youngest doesn’t like it, so I just put him to bed sleepy without a feed and he went to sleep. They were fully weaned at 11 months, 10 months and 12 months.
Good luck, I hope these MoMs Answers help.

  • maybe try cutting out one feed every couple of days. eventually, she will be fully weaned. goodluck with it

  • Just get rid of one feed at a time, while starting to introduce formula. It took me about 6 weeks and am now just two feeds a day morning and night. (9.5 mo) I started by cutting out the mid morning and mid afternoon feeds and then one a night. It will take a while but hang in there!! You have done so well bf for 9 months! I had no luck on the expressing either. And maybe try a couple of types of formula – we tried three before we found one she would have!
