Hello!

We have a couple of streaming services but I just don’t seem to be seeing any good new movies coming up. We haven’t watched a good family movie in a while and I feel like I’ve been through all the lists online 3 or 4 times. I’d love to hear some recommendations (doesn’t have to be new, just tell me your faves) we watch it all, old, new, action, comedy, scary. Our youngest is 16 so most things are fine but I’ll check them out before watching. Thanks for any and all suggestions!!

  • Not movies, but my kids have recently really been enjoying some of the 80s TV shows that I enjoyed back in the day. “Scarecrow and Mrs King”, “Fame”, “Family Ties” … remember them? The advantage here is that it does take a few weeks or even months to work through them.

  • You can’t go wrong with old movies:
    1. Karate kid 1
    2. Gremlins
    3. Ghoonies
    4. Pippy long stockings
    5. Chitty chitty bang bang
    6. Charlie and the chocolate factory
    7. The wizard of oz
    8. Sound of music
    9. Jurassic park

    New movies:
    1. Transformers
    2. Kung foo panda
    3. Ice age

  • Thank you so much to those who gave some suggestions! I am happy to say I haven’t seen most of them so we will definitely be looking into those over the next week! We definitely find watching a movie together after dinner is a great bonding process. We pause frequently to discuss things and have a laugh at others etc. I love the national geographic idea aswell. Haven’t watched any of those in quite a while!

  • To be honest I think it’s quite hard to get teens involved / engaged in watching a family movie when they are older. On the odd occasion like during a holiday we do however succeed watching a movie together. In our family we find the most success in watching nature documentaries like the Planet Earth series and alike

  • Along with the classics I commented on below; we also go through movies from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and we love revisiting these times and some of the great and not so great movies that were made during these times. It can be such fun to introduce children to movies from the past.

  • We love a range of movies. We recently watched the newly added animated movie on Netflix called In Your Dreams. Anything Studio Ghibli; Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, My Neighbour Totoro. All are excellent. Bit of a throw back, but Empire Records is a fave of mine. Fall Guy was entertaining. Recently rewatched 500 days of summer and loved it as much as I did back then

  • This is a good question and also a good time of the year with Christmas and the school holidays approaching to find out about movies. We always go to the classics at this time of the year and rewatch them. It is a good idea to search for a classics movie list and watch them.

  • Hi there, I’ve just recently watched a movie Wynyard 7yr old grandson called Wild Robot and while I’m not into animation this film was actually great. It was a bit sad in some places but overall it’s a great movie.
