Hello!

I tried making long grain brown rice in my rice cooker and it turned out to be a fluffy watery mess! So, I cooked it a little longer and then it stuck to the bottom and got very, very, very sticky! I rinsed the rice three times and measured in double the water. What am I doing wrong here? Thanks MoMs.

  • Some family members are starting to use brown rice and told me that cooking it on its own doesn’t taste nice . ( rice cooker method too ) So they mix the brown with the white. I just bought a packet of brown rice for the very first time, so will experiment to see what the taste is like . I’m very curious .

  • Try using a ratio of about 1.5 cups water per cup of brown rice to start with and then when cooked rinse under hot water in a colander. I find it does take a little longer to cook than white rice so maybe you need to add another few mins to your cooking time. Remember it still has the husk so will always be a bit “harder” than white rice

  • I always soak my rice, particularly brown rice for most of the day of possible before cooking. This helps to make it fluffy and much easier to digest. If you forget to soak it in the morning, just soak for add long as possible before you cook it. Even an hour or two will help. A little apple cider vinegar in the soaking water is good too.

  • if it was too runny try again with less water. Mine comes out fine so sorry i can’t offer any more advice.

  • You have too much water. It will not need double to water to white rice. Go for about 1 cup rice : 1.5 cups water.

  • yes follow instruction or do it in the microwave! too easy

  • Does the packaging have any cooking instructions on it? Brown rice is better for you as it hasn’t been processed as much. Soaking it first would remove some of the starch so it would contain less carbohydrates which can push blood glucose levels up.

  • I used to use a rice cooker in my microwave and it did a lovely job– white or brown. It did not seem to matter. Nowadays with just the 2 of us I put a quantity of rice in a saucepan and just cover it with water and cook it by the good old absorption method! This works well either with white or brown rice and golden rice too! The secret is to rinse it in boiling water in a colander straight after it is finished cooking. This brings it up nice and fluffy.

  • I guess it depends on what machine you are using and what type of instructions (if any) they have provided for cooking brown rice. I have a cheapie Kambrook rice cooker and there were no instructions for cooking brown rice.

Both types of rice need to be rinsed prior to cooking. White rice is 1 cup of rice with 1.25 cups of water. Brown rice is 1 cup of rice with 1.5 cups of water.

It does take longer to cook but I couldn’t tell you how much exactly because my machine turns off automatically when it senses it’s cooked.

    Good luck!

  • I usually add 1/2 cup more water compared to white rice. When it has finished cooking I add about 1/4 cup liquid chicken stock and toss through with the spatula and let it sit with the lid on about 5 minutes.

  • Sensational tip BUGGERIT on coconut rice.

  • Brown rice takes longer. I use 2 cups rice, 3 cups of water or stock. (To soften it faster I soak it for 1 hour before in hot tap water as i find it cooks better. Tip this water out and new water for cooking.) White Rice 1 cup of rice 2 cups of water or stock ratio. Tip we love coconut rice. 2 cups of Rice I tin of coconut cream I cut water.

  • It sounds like too much water. Check the instructions on the rice cooker – I know I have to cook brown differently to white in mine.

  • I cant cook brown rice in the rice cooker just wont work

  • I soak brown rice too; it does cook differently to white rice.

  • I think you are using too much water! Don’t double, but add half cup more. So 1 cup rice=1.5cups water. When the rice cooker goes to warm, i usually just turn it off, leave for a few minutes before serving.

  • I always find it best to soak brown rice first for a few hours before cooking :)
