Hello!

I have 2 kids under 2, we live half an hour from the closest town and the childcare there is very limited to the point I can’t get the kids in anywhere.. Any suggestions of businesses I could do from home living rural? That isn’t a period type scheme. (Please No Tupperware, Arbonne, Juice plus type things)

  • Freelance Writing or Editing – If you enjoy writing, many companies look for freelance writers or editors for blogs, articles, or content creation.
Virtual Assistant – Businesses often hire VAs for tasks like email management, data entry, or customer service. It’s flexible and can fit into your schedule.
Selling Handmade Items – If you’re crafty, consider Etsy or local markets for selling handmade goods like candles, artwork, or knitted items.

  • I’d look at what your interests are and what qualifications you have that could help land you a job. You will likely need flexibility to attend to your kids, so customer service and call centre type jobs probably wouldn’t suit, whereas something you can do that doesn’t require speaking to customers/Clients directly may be more suitable.

  • I live an hour away from a town and I work 2 jobs remotely.
Both jobs are based about 4.5hours from my home.
My first job is as a mortgage brokers assistant, I key the loans and submit them to the banks, I then follow up the progress of the loans with the banks and let the clients know of the updates. everything can be done via email and phone.
My second job is admin for a cabinet maker. I do the accounts, payroll and client services (date scheduling, bookings, colour selections etc) Again everything is internet or phone call based.

look through seek and use the phrase ‘work from home’ in your search field.
Alternatively, find a job in the town near you and approach them to see if they would consider having a remote assistant. Thats how my jobs became remote, I moved and my jobs were happy to keep me on but from afar.

  • Maybe look at other things people are doing in your area for ideas?

  • Maybe look at particular creative skills?

  • Is there any small businesses that do service work of any type and fill out work sheets that have to be invoiced later? Maybe you could do the invoices…….and statements if invoices have not been paid by their due date. Some businesses can’t do customer invoices until they receive the invoice from the business they bought the parts from unless they have a price list. Maybe you could arrange to pick up the paperwork and swap over it over on a regular basis. Just a thought. I know a Mum who has done it but it may not be an option for you. She didn’t have a computer for invoicing either.

  • I work from home for a mortgage broker in a personal assistant/ support role.

I also do the book work and job scheduling for a cabinet maker.

If you find someone who is happy for you to work from home it’s really easy once your all set up. 90% of mine can be done after hours so if my little one is having a rough day I can wait for my husband to come home.

Do you have any skills of hobbies you could utilize?
Sewing, crafts, ironing, fitness, cooking, cleaning etc.
also Airtasker is a good site.
Also search ‘work from home’ on seek.

  • Try Airtasker! I have picked up a few easy jobs to do at home through them like writing in greeting cards for companies, product testing and mystery shopping. There are a lot of jobs on their depending on your skills. Good luck x

  • Gosh that’s a tough situation. Look I’m not much help as anything with 2 young kids I’d find difficult! I think there are editing for money jobs? I’ve heard There is such a thing as remote reception or I.T support jobs you can do from home but have never looked into it, I assume if it’s only email support it’d be ok with kids but probably not phone calls. Otherwise online businesses. Any unique skills you have that could be turned into profit? Consultations? Sewing?
If you ware wanting to keep yourself sane rather than income online study may help.
    Good luck finding something!

  • I’m in a similar situation where I need to try to raise money while at home, and it isn’t easy. I wish I could offer you some positive advice but I’ve tried many methods of earning money from home and not getting anywhere. Surveys are time fillers but they offer very little money, I’ve sold a few things on eBay but the cost of postage makes it pretty nonviable ….. I will follow this thread with interest and, if I have any other ideas, I’ll pop back to post. Good luck!

  • Maybe you could have your own little online boutique selling kids clothes or woman’s clothes. Even jewellery? Otherwise if you’re crafty you could look at making something to sell at markets and online. I hope you have some luck finding an at home business venture x
