Hello!

It’s terrible when you see your baby or toddler straining and or constipated.

When your baby is constipated naturally you give more milk for hydration. It makes a big difference to softening the texture of the poo.

For a toddler what do you give to help relieve constipation? What works for you?

We saw good results after
1. Water consumption.
2. Anything potato (crisps, roasted, fried or boiled)
3. Pear
4. Weetbix.

  • Prunes are great and can be given stewed/strained from around 6mths .
Prune juice is also available however the sugar content can be high in many of these juices.
Massaging the tummy in a clockward direction is helpful and laying flat and bending the legs ..knees up while outward is also helpful.

  • I would suggest Kiwi fruit and more water. I personally take 15ml of olive oil each day and it helps me, but I don’t know whether this is advisable for children. It might be worth asking a doctor whether olive oil is okay and how much.

  • I found adding some child friendly constipation medicine helped my daughter. You can also get powder that dissolves into milk or food that is suitable for kids and can help. I spoke to the pharmacy and they recommended a few things and this help tremendously and now she doesn’t have any issues.

  • We find that adding one or two prunes or dates to one of our toddlers meals really helps. I cut them up then blitz them, then put them in with his yoghurt and weetbix. Now that he loves his fruit and vegetables I find he hardly ever needs it, so I think a diet high in both of those help

  • I think besides looking at the fiber intake, it’s very important to look at the water intake. When you increase fiber without increasing water or liquids, it will have the opposite effect. My eldest had quite bad constipation and we found kiwi, pear and strawberries helpful and no banana, besides water water water. Also a daily belly massage, clockwise around the belly button can be helpful. My youngest has Down syndrome and with a lower muscle tone this was always an issue, we use Osmolax daily for her.

  • As a mum with a little that struggles with prolapse bowels (came from her medical conditions) when she was younger, We where able to fix this buy adding more fiber to her diet, Peas, carrots, pear juice and most of all cutting out process food all together. still have it but as a treat. She no longer struggles with constipation.

drs also recommend Mircolax and osmolax to helped with constipation. But honestly a huge diet change was more beneficial and reduced the chances off needing surgery
