Hello!

Anyone else have a baby who screams every time they’re in the car seat? I dread going anywhere because it’s non-stop crying until we arrive. Any ideas on what to do??

  • I had this happen to me with my second daughter. She would scream and scream, and I had a little thing in my mind that her seat looked wrong. But because it was a cheaper car seat to my first baby as my mum gifted it I just put it down to it being a different brand. After all I had baby hunting install it. But the screaming continued as did my worry that the seat was incorrect.. after plenty of googling I discovered that the car seat was intact laying way toobfar down and incorrectly. Calling the shop I put the biggest complaint in worried about the times id driven my new born unsafely. I had a manager come out to my car and check the install which they agreed was installed incorrectly by their installers.
What im getting at is ensure your seat is in properly

  • Have you tried one of those arch thingys that are designed to go over baby car seats, and which have a few soft toys dangling from them? I hope my description is clear enough. Maybe your baby just needs to be distracted. I guess you could also try music or an audio book?

  • This would have driven me insane early on! I remember the hospital telling me the number one reason babies cry in the car is they’re hot. Try a layer less in the car because the car seats makes them hot! Try after a feed. Have car only toys. Make sure you’ve got shade on the windows!

  • Oh gosh! I’m so sorry! I know how hard this time can be! Firstly make sure that it’s super comfy, next hang some distraction toys or mirrors so your bub can see around or even see you. Last resort, we had to have someone sit in the back next to bub because it was so hard. The good news is it will pass, just try and choose the best time to go out. Ie, when bub is tired or happy

  • When my toddler was a newborn I would play The Happy Song by Imogen Heap and it made him love being in the car. He loved looking into the mirror and having a crinkly sensory book or plush rattle to hold. Now he loves car rides and could be in there all day

  • Oh im so sorry to hear mumma! We’ve all had those moments with our babies im sure. I found that whilst my baby was in a rear facing seat – this would be the time when they were the most unsettled not being able to see us. i dont blame them! We solved this by propping one of those baby mirrors onto the headrest so they could see us from that view. It solved it immediately! Hope that helps.

  • It’s hard to see our little one unsettled. Of course multiple things can play a role like; motion sickness, separation anxiety, an uncomfortable seat or seat position, too much stimulation, a car that is too hot or cold. etc I always made sure they were well fed and had a clean nappy before driving off, would reach out my hand to sooth and sing songs. A favourite teddy and some safe and simple toys can help too

  • This is a hard one as there can be so many reasons that they dislike it or associate it with a discomfort that happened previously. My son had issues with his ears popping going up and down the mountain and hated going in the car. You just have to experiment. Maybe face the car seat the other way., Hang mobiles as distractions, play music and sing along. Good luck.
