Hello!

Bath and dinner routine advice – I have 2.5 yr old and 1 yr old boys and I’m wondering how some Mums feed and wash their kids in the evenings before their partner gets home, do you give them something different to what you are having or how they wash them and then have dinner? Both boys make such a mess at dinner! Thanks

  • When my kids where younger I would give them dinner around 5pm and then bath after a little play. Dinner too close to bedtime doesn’t help them to get to sleep as the body is active digesting the meal.

  • My husband works late sometimes. The nights I know he is going to be late or work nights. I try to plan around that.
Most nights it’s usually what we are eating, I put ours(hubby and mine) aside and feed the kids first. Then give them a bath. Both kids can get messy (1 and 6) and I find it settles them down for bed especially the 1 yr old.

  • We always ate together, at these ages, the kids were eating what we ate. Then I popped them both in the bath

  • Ibusually do dinner first then hubby helps with bath when he gets home from work… Yes I have an angel of a husband, plus we have four kids so I couldn’t do it without him.

  • Dinner with Mum (& sometimes Dad), a little family time then bath, followed by a story in bed.
There’s no point bathing the kids before dinner because food goes everywhere & I find they settle a lot better after a bath, they are nice & relaxed (as well as clean!).
Most of the time they are sound asleep before the story is even finished.
We use Johnsons Dreamy Skin & since we’ve began using that the kids skin is so much softer & they sleep a lot better, I strongly recommend it.

  • I like to feed first then have a ‘bedtime bath’. She is 3yo and loves her bedtime baths. Then all clothes are in laundry.

  • we always do dinner first unless it has been a particularly dirty afternoon then its two baths!

  • there are some good comments here

  • or sometimes i make sure i only give my daughter her fav food for dinner. then no mess..lol

  • immendiate bath after a meal is bad for digestion. wait for 30 mins

  • Straight after dinner is a good time

  • the one year old would probably have different (more veggies, more mush) and I would bath after meal time

  • Did any ideas below help?

  • how did it work out?

  • Now my kids are getting older I can do bath time before dinner, but I used to do dinner, bath, brush teeth, story and bed.

  • What did you end up doing with your 2 sons?

  • My kids eat dinner first and then bath and both parents help do the dinner and bath and bed time

  • Depends what’s on the menu. If we’re having spaghetti or something then we definitely do baths after dinner. But if dinner is something relatively mess free I try and get as much done before dinner as possible so that bed time doesn’t get blown out later. Such a busy time of day and doesn’t seem to matter how organised you are.

  • I have been struggling with my 4 year old since he was 2 with dinner, he has been holding food in his mouth and takes nearly 2 hours to eat his dinner (just dinner).

I actually found that giving him his dinner at lunch time he eats alot better and quicker, so in the evening he has a sandwhich or something light like that.
He seems to enjoy his food so much more now.
He even sleeps better after his had his bath/shower now.

  • We all eat together at about 6pm and then do showers after that. If your partner is home later than that then I would just set aside a plate for him. Eating together at the table is great for kids social skills. Also consider showers rather than baths because you can get them in and out quick!
