Hello!

My 5 year old still has night time mishaps
Is it normal? I use pull ups every night and theyre mostly always wet in the morning. Am I delaying learning not to wet the bed by using thr pull ups or is it just something theyll brow out of?

  • They will grow out of it. How many parents of 15 year olds are asking if they should try and get their main stream teenager out of night nappies?
Seriously its better to have them in night nappies than have them wetting the bed and getting stressed over it. It will happen.

  • I still use pull ups on my 4 year old and think we will transition her out of them by the time she starts school in a few months. I think each child can show whether they’re ready or not – ours kept wetting the bed still in undies.

  • It is possible – the problem with pull ups is that they are just too good. They are very absorbent, so sometimes kids get lazy because they know that it won’t hurt if they wet them. If you are concerned about that, you should move from pull ups to absorbent cloth undies. I believe Bonds may make them? Back when my kids were small I used to use Bright Bots, but they went out of business. I’m sure if you Google you will find lots of options available.
Once your child learns that they will still feel wet (the undies are absorbent, but only to a point and your child will still feel wet), they will quickly learn that it is best to visit a toilet. There will be a few accidents in the beginning, but it’s all part of the fun.

  • I think if you have a good plan, no drinks after 5pm, toilet before bed and then possibly take to toilet before you go to bed also, if you can get a couple of dry nights in a row their confidence will build and you may see a change. My mum had an old wives tale that said, if they haven’t got rid of nappies by the age of 7 they will be in them until they’re 12.

  • It’s more common than you think to keep having random accidents at that age. Don’t make a big deal out of it and time will help. One of my grandsons had issues very regularly and they used a bed wetting alarm that clipped on from The Parenting Garden and it was amazing.

  • It’s quite normal for kids who are able to stay dry during the day to have accidents during the night. In fact many kids in prep/kindy may have a day accident every now and then.
My son had regularly night accidents during the night. We never made a big fuss about it, nor gave him pull ups either. We used a good mattress protector in the case of an accident in the night we just changed, took the bedding off together, popped it in the washing machine, put new bedding on together and back to sleep. All with love and patience and without using any negative word

  • It’s also worth mentioning that I recently learnt from a naturopath that one of the top signs of mould exposure is bed wetting in kids so it couldn’t hurt to check the environments your child spends a lot of time in as some of us are more genetically susceptible to mould toxicity.

  • I wouldn’t stress about it too much, I know it’s concerning but as long as there is nothing wrong medically then it will just take time and persistence with not drinking too much and making sure to go to the toilet before bed. You definitely aren’t the only one in this position which is why pull ups are so popular. He/she will grow out of it eventually

  • It can take different times for children to stop bed wetting and the important thing is to make it a stress free time for the child and for the parents. It is important to make sure the household is equipped with all of the products needed to manage bed wetting. We always bought Pull Ups when on special.

  • Every child is so very different when it comes to possible bed wetting and we ended up getting support from our GP. We started by eliminating any possible medicals reasons or issues for the bed wetting. We then used pull ups and also a water proof sheet at bedtimes. We eventually got to a stage of no bed wetting but it did take time.

  • Is it a boy by any chance? Ive heard before that boys can sometimes take longer to stop bedwetting at nighttime. I’ve heard this from so many mums ive spoken to! Do you have one of those bed wetting mats you can place under the bedsheet? We used to do this for potential accidents until the kids got a bit older. Was also a blessing for those times they threw up! Just saves you from having to completely strip a bed at night
